University of the Sacred Heart, Tokyo offers an intensiveprogram tostudents from all areas of the world.

OBJECTIVES:

The University aims to provide a stimulating environment in which students of variousnationalities studying Japanese have an opportunity to improve their Japanese language intensively, by getting acquainted with its culture and experiencing life in Japan. It is the University’s strong hope that these students and Japanese students develop further understanding of different cultures andbecome able to exchange their opinions.

This program offers a direct encounter with Japan, its language and people which will build up the real understanding in and confidence among people of the worldsurpassing the difference of circumstances.

Ⅰ．Program

1.Outline

● Japanese Language

Japanese Language classes are scheduled four (4) to seven (7) times a week (90-minutes each).

● Other Undergraduate Coursesoffered by the University

Students can select and attend courses of their interests. Most of the courses are in Japanese.

A tutor system is available for those who wish to study undergraduate courses lectured in Japanese. A Japanese student will help summarize the content of the course once or twice a week. The details will be explained to the students upon their arrival.

● Optional Courses on Specific Subject

For those who want to strengthen their abilities in Japanese (e.g. conversation, kanji or composition) or to focus on specific interest (e.g. reading novels in Japanese), students can make a request for individual lessons. This will fulfill each student’s interestand needs during her stay at the University.

● Cultural Program

Apart from the courses they attend with other Japanese students, the Universityhas a variety of activities for students who participate in this Intensive Program. Theobjective is to provide a diverse set of cultural contexts. By experiencingcultural activities and communicating with Japanese people including the University students, students will have an opportunity to deepen theirunderstanding of Japan, its culture and people.

The activities are scheduled in the afternoon, once or twice a week(some are on weekends). For some activities there is an additionalcharge.

The following are some of the activities we have had until now:

－Introductory Courses for Tea Ceremony, or Flower Arrangement,etc.

－Observation & Participation of Japanese Martial Arts such as Naginata, or

Japanese Traditional Musical Instruments, etc.

－Participation in Various Exchange Activities with Japanese Students

－Workshop (e.g. Cross-cultural Understanding/Marketing & Service) with

JapaneseStudents

－Visits to Museums of Japanese Arts

－Visits to Traditional Theatrical Arts (e.g. Kabuki, Noh, Bunraku,etc)

－Excursions to Historical Sites (Kamakura, Kyoto, etc)

－Participation in Volunteer Activities/Visits to Various Companies

＊In case there are any students who cannot stay for the above mentioned period due to their enrolled universities’ academic calendars, they would have to get approval from their universities in advance and indicate their requested periods of stay in their application forms.

＊Students are requested to arrive prior to the beginning of the semester to be in time for a series of orientations. For those staying at the student residence, if you plan to arrive earlier than the requested arrival date, please consult with the InternationalCenter.

＊They are requested to find their own places to stay in Tokyo, when the University student residence is closed during the Christmas Holidays.

＊The student residence may be open about a week after the official closure in the end of each semester, due to the intensive undergraduate coursesheld. In this case, you may be able to stay at the price of ¥500 per night.

3.Accommodation:

Basically students are advised to stay at the student residence on campus. A single room is available. The room size is 7.6 square meters.

Please note that the student residence will be closed during summer vacation and Christmas & New Year Holidays. Summer vacationis from the beginning of Augustthroughthe end of September, while winter vacation is from mid December through early January. During that period, we ask all the students to find their own accommodation and pay the accommodation fees.

4.Completion of the Program:

● Certification

Two types of Certificatewill be issued after completion of the program.

－Certificate of Completion

－Course assessment including all the courses each student attended

Ⅱ．Application

1. Qualifications of Applicants:

● Eligibility:

Female students, having foreign nationalities, who are takingundergraduate or graduate courses in 4- year colleges or universities. Students arerequested to apply for Student Visa which allows students to stay for one semester at the nearest Japanese Consulate.

● Applicants have to fulfill any of the following:

(1) Those who wish to improve their Japanese language, study Japanese culture, or

experience life in Japan

(2) Those who wish to study at the University of the Sacred Heart, Tokyo

(3)Those who can obtain two letters of recommendation:

① a Japanese-language teacher at a college oruniversity which the student belongs to.

② a faculty member of the same institution who knows the student.

2. Number of Students to be Admitted:

Spring/Summer Semester, 201310 students

Fall/Winter Semester, 201310 students

3. Application Procedures:

● Closing date for the application:

·January 11(Friday), 2013 for Spring/Summer Semester

·June 13(Thursday), 2013 for Fall/Winter Semester

● Application form & other documents:

a. Application form(total of 8 pages) including:

－Statement of personal information

－Japanese language study background

－Essay (in Japanese) on the motivation for applying for this program

b. Certificate of studentship (in English)

c. Official transcript (in English)

d. Two letters of recommendation from a Japanese-language teacher and a faculty

member of your college and university. It should include informationindicating

the level of Japanese language, period/total hours of study and textbooks used.

  1. Three color photos (a bust shot; size 4cm for vertical x 3cm horizontal)

For those who are planning to take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test

(Nihongo Nouryoku Shiken) in Japan during this program, please send an extra

photo.

＊An application form, a personal information form and an essay form can be obtained via e-mail upon request.

＊For those who have a Japanese Language Proficiency Test certificate, the score report is also requested to submit along with the above documents.

＊In addition to the health certificate, a report on measles is mandatory at the University. Measles prevailed in 2007 and many universities were closed to prevent a more serious prevalence. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has set a specific policy of preventing it since then.

4. Confirmation of the Acceptance:

Applicants will be notified of the acceptance to the program by both e-mail and the

official letter signed by the Dean of the InternationalCenter by express mail.

Spring/Summer Semester:by February19 (Tuesday), 2013

Fall/Winter Semester:by July 16 (Tuesday), 2013

5. Fees & Expenses for Year 2013:

● Fees

Tuition: Japanese 150,000 Yen

Student residence fee: Exempted.

However students arerequested to pay Japanese 60,000 Yen (fixed) for utilities,

laundry and kitchen utensils.

Expenses to be covered by students:

①Airfares

②Domestic transportation from NaritaInternationalAirportto Tokyo

③Textbooks

④Liability and medical insurances*Please refer to“6. Overseas Insurance.”

⑤Expenses for trips & excursions as ‘field work’

⑥Expenses for participating in program for cultural activities

⑦Daily expenses i.e. meals, etc.

● Method of Payment

After being notified by the University of the acceptance, students are requested to transfer the tuition fee to the assigned bank account during the assigned period prior to their arrival.

● Cancellation

After application, if a student has to cancel, the University will reimburse the already-transferred tuition fee subtracting 30,000 Yen for cancellation fee.

6. Overseas Insurance:

●Fee for Medical Treatment

Students with student visa must apply for the “National Health Insurance (Kokumin Kenko Hoken)”at the cost of approximately Japanese 5,000 Yen forone semester. It is mandatory.

●Liability Insurance

If the students wish to apply for other liability insurance including the one against loss or damages of their belongings during their stay in Japan, they are requested tobe insuredat home before their arrival. In case it is impossible, the University will arrange it in Japan at the cost of approximately Japanese 70,000 Yen.

●Support by the University

Other liability insurance during their stay in Japan (both inside and outside the campus) will be arranged and covered by the University.

7.Others:

－Students are requested not to undertake any work on a part-time basis duringtheir

stay in Japan. Since their stay is very short, the University suggests thatthey

concentrate on their studies and exchanges with Japanese students.

－After the completion of the program, students, in principle, are requested to leave

Japan within a month. When they have specific reason, they are to apply tothe

InternationalCenter.
