Dear Parents/Guardians:
It is my honor and pleasure to assist in the education of your child. I will strive to encourage a successful and enjoyable learning experience at Nobel Charter Middle School.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The major emphasis of this course is to promote the communication and critical thinking skills through a balanced language arts program, which follows the Common Core State Standards and provides for student growth through appropriate practice in listening, reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking.
There are four components of the Gifted Program:
· Acceleration – the pace or speed of learning is altered in order to challenge learners
· Complexity – broadening the learner’s understanding of the areas by asking the learner to make connections, relationships, and associations between, within and across subjects and disciplines
· Depth – challenging learners by enabling them venture further, deeper, and more elaborately into the area under study
· Novelty – gaining a personal understanding of the area under study
BEHAVIOR/COOPERATION: I expect students to conduct themselves responsibly and courteously, to contribute positively to the classroom environment, and to take responsibility for their learning. I trust you want the very best learning environment for your child and will support me by taking an active interest in your child’s progress, reviewing his/her homework and communicating with me if you have any questions.
HOMEWORK will be posted on our school website www.nobelms.com and assigned based on the needs of the students in meeting the class objectives as well as the state standards. It includes reading, writing, preparing projects, studying for tests and quizzes, and completing handouts.
SUGGESTED SUPPLY LIST
· A composition notebook for WOD and class notes
· A section in the binder for the handouts
· A set of highlighters and colored pencils
· Pens for writing and pencils for drawing
· Donation of supplies are welcomed and appreciated; materials will be provided to students as needed.
GRADING PROCEDURES:
· Grades are cumulative throughout the semester (and parents are encouraged to check their child’s progress on schoology). All assignments will be based on a point system and the scale will be as follows for total points earned:
A = 100-90% B = 89-80% C = 79-70% D = 69-60% F = below 60%
· Student work will be weighed in the following categories:
Classwork: 35% Homework: 20% Test/Quiz: 20% Composition/Essay: 25%
· Students are encouraged to retake any tests or quizzes and to revise any writing assignments for a better grade within a week it is returned.
· Late work is accepted for three days after the due date with the reduction of one grade per day late and 50% on the third day.
· Students are expected to complete tests, quizzes, and class work, or any other missed assignments within one week after returning from an absence.
· All writing must be typed (encouraged and preferred) or written neatly.
· “My printer is broken” is not a valid reason not to turn it in on time; it will be considered late. If you need to print it, you may save it and print it in my room.
· Work Habit and Cooperation grades will be reassessed every quarter.
- Three checks for non-materials (books, handouts & etc.), disrespectful behaviors, and/or tardiness to class will result in U in Cooperation.
- If a student is missing more than three assignments in class, it will result in S in WH; more than five, s/he will get a U in WH.
ATTENDANCE is extremely important. Your child’s presence in the classroom is expected and reflects his/her grade. S/he is responsible for all make-up work for absences. Make-up exams will be given during Pledge, lunch time or after school.
I look forward to this school year. If you have any question, call me at (818) 773-4700. My e-mail address is .
Sincerely,
Ms. Chae S. Yu
