Crossing at Junction of George St/Powis Terr/Calsayseat Rd/Powis Place (Doctor’s Surgery)
Dear Ms Spalding
As mentioned in our representation about the George St Area Controlled Parking Zone, we are very concerned at the lack of movement on the junction at the Doctor’s Surgery. The junction as it stands at present is inciting pedestrians to cross at the most dangerous point possible. The lack of crossing facilities on the East side of George St at the point where it meets Powis Place means that anyone walking up George St on that side is faced with the option of crossing George St at a very busy position, or crossing Powis Place which is equally busy. If they are elderly and don’t notice the fencing on the other side of the street at Powis Place, they get across and find they have a long walk either way to get around the fence to get to the Doctor’s Surgery. We constantly see people doing this and have to pass by with our hearts in our mouths as we just have to hope that they get to the Surgery without incident.
We realise that the junction poses problems with its positioning, especially with the site of the vehicle stopping position on George St, but we find it hard to believe that there is no solution to the problem. Putting in further crossing request poles by dropping the George St stopping position back into line with the point where the pavement ends in the middle of the road, and putting a break in the fence at the far side by the Surgery would help considerably.
We are disappointed that this junction has not been included to be examined in the current zoning issue for the George St Controlled Parking Zone. It seems like a great opportunity to solve two problems at one time has been missed.
Furthermore, the traffic at peak times consistently blocks this junction. We believe that the introduction of yellow boxes at this point would make a considerable difference. As well as helping the traffic flow it would also stop people having to cross between stationery vehicles.
We are concerned at the length of time it is taking to find a solution as we believe it is only a matter of time before an incident occurs and at worst someone is killed there. The last thing we want to be doing is going over the issues we have raised at an inquest.
Yours sincerely
Andrew MacLeod
