PSA Peugeot Citroën
Continued Growth in First-Half 2003 Sales

  • Worldwide sales up 1.9% to 1,689,000 units in first-half 2003
  • Western European market share: 15.9% versus 15.4% in first-half 2002
  • Sales outside Western Europe up 5.5%

PSA Peugeot Citroën sold 1,689,000 vehicles (963,000 Peugeots and 726,000 Citroëns) in the first six months of 2003, an increase of 1.9% from the year-earlier period, in line with the forecast of 3,350,000 vehicles sold in 2003.

Western Europe (17 countries): nearly a half-point gain in market share

In Western Europe, registrations rose 0.5% to 1,344,000 units (739,000 Peugeots and 605,000 Citroëns) during the first half, while overall demand for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles contracted by 2.8%. As a result, market share widened to 15.9% (8.7% for Peugeot and 7.2% for Citroën) from 15.4% in first-half 2002, further strengthening PSA Peugeot Citroën’s position as Europe’s second-largest carmaker.

In a French market down 7.8%, Group registrations declined by a slower 5.6% to 436,714 units, from 461,937 the year before. Market share increased once again, by 0.8 points, to 34.4% from 33.6% in first-half 2002.

In the United Kingdom, where demand rose by 1.2% but margins were eroded by the decline in the pound against the euro, Group registrations declined by 6.1% to 187,000 units from 199,000 the year before.

The Group continued to enjoy strong growth in Italy, building on last year’s 16.2% increase. In a market down 2.9%, Group registrations gained 21.9% during the first half, with a total of 153,000 units accounting for 11.5% of the market versus 9.2% at June 30, 2002.

In Spain, where demand was stable (up 0.4%), PSA Peugeot Citroën registrations rose 1.1% to 188,000 units, pushing market share up to 22.5%.

In Germany, Group registrations grew by 10.1% in a market down a slight 1.1%, driving a further increase in market share to 6.0% from 5.4% in first-half 2002.

Outside Western Europe: unit sales up 5.5%

Outside Western Europe, sales rose 5.5% to 362,000 vehicles (238,000 Peugeots and 124,000 Citroëns) and accounted for 21.4% of the worldwide consolidated total.

In Latin America, sales declined 12% to 52,000 vehicles in a difficult economic and currency environment. In Brazil, the Porto Real plant inaugurated in 2001 has broadened its production range following the April launch of the Citroën C3.

In Central Europe (Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Croatia and Slovakia) and Turkey, the Group continued to expand in a market up 19%. Sales rose by 29.4% to 78,000 units during the period, lifting aggregate market share to 13.1% from 5.1% in 1997.

The Group consolidated its presence in the fast growing Chinese market, with the 2002 launch of the new Citroën Elysée helping to drive a 55% increase in sales to 52,000 units in the first half.
