Information for Applicants
The Center for Professional Development School (PDS) Partnerships is seeking qualified applicants for its Teaching Fellowship positions for the 2015-2016academic year. Positions in elementary, middle and high schools include half-time teaching concurrent with enrollment in a Master’s degree program within The Patton College of Education.
Eligibility requirements
- A bachelor's degree in Early Childhood, Middle Childhood, Special Education, or Adolescent-to-Young-Adult Education, completed no later than Summer, 2015.
- An Ohio teaching license, effective for the 2015-16school year.
- Admission to a master’s program to begin in Summer or Fall, 2015.
- High commitment to teaching and student learning.
- Strong leadership and collaboration skills.
- Professional commitment to a PDS Partnership from mid-August thru June.
- Three letters of recommendation, including one from a teacher who has observed your teaching.
- Minimum GPA: 3.0.

What exactly is a Teaching Fellowship?
Teaching Fellowships are offered by the Center for Professional Development School (PDS) Partnerships. The primary responsibility of each PDS is to provide dedicated early field experiences for undergraduate students preparing to become teachers, under the leadership of a site-based PDS Liaison Teacher. The Liaison also serves as Mentor Teacher for the Teaching Fellow. Together, the Liaison and Teaching Fellow share the Liaison’s classroom and teaching responsibilities. The Liaison uses release time to provide coordination and support services for the PDS Teachers who are sponsoring undergraduates in their classrooms.
How long does a Teaching Fellowship last?
Tuition waivers and a stipend are provided for Fall and spring semesters. Teaching Fellows observe the public school calendar.
Is it too overwhelming to be teaching and taking classes at the same time?
Teaching Fellows teach a half-day, every day. The other half-day is devoted to graduate study and classes. The experience is demanding but reasonable and rewarding. Graduate courses are relevant and tuned to teaching.
Is the program too much like student teaching?
The program is not structured like student teaching. Teaching Fellows are fully licensed, highly competent teachers. Mentor teachers are available to provide guidance and assistance when needed.
Who is my mentor?
The Mentor Teacher is an experienced teacher who provides mentoring assistance throughout the school year. Mentor and Fellow usually share a common classroom and the same students. They meet together regularly to plan curriculum, confer about learning and progress of students, and discuss questions and concerns of mutual interest. The Mentor will also observe teaching and confer with the Fellow on a regular basis about strengths and progress over the course of the year.
What is required of a Teaching Fellow, in general?
- Teach half-days in an elementary, middle or high school.
- Teach with an experienced Mentor Teacher.
- Register for full-time GA load.
- Receive a stipend during Fall and Spring Semester.
Other fun facts!
Teaching Fellows will not be pulled from the assigned schedule to serve as a substitute teacher.
Teaching Fellows may substitute teach (with compensation by school district) on university holidays.
Teaching Fellows are expected to attend Parent-Teacher Conferences and In-service Days.
Teaching Fellows complete Interim Reports and Grade Cards.

POLICY FOR AWARDING ASSOCIATESHIPS/TUITION SCHOLARSHIP TO
GRADUATE STUDENTS
Prospective students applying for admission or currently enrolled students with the Department of Teacher Education requesting financial assistance will complete a Department of Teacher Education financial aid application.
The financial aid application should be returned to the Department of Teacher Education, 202 McCracken Hall. The application will be reviewed using the criteria described below for master’s and doctoral students.
Priority for awarding financial aid will be given second- and third-year doctoral students, based on evidence of satisfactory progress as discussed in attached criteria, and who have already been awarded aid the previous year. To the extent possible, associateships shall be used to recruit and/or encourage prospective
students for programs within the department.
It will be the responsibility of the individual graduate student to reapply, when appropriate, for each financial aid application deadline date. Application should be submitted by March 15th of the preceding academic year.
CRITERIA FOR AWARDING OF GRADUATE ASSOCIATESHIPS AND TUITION SCHOLARSHIPS
MASTER’S DEGREE STUDENTS
- Graduate associateship and tuition scholarship support for Master’s degree students ordinarily will be limited to not morethan 3 quarters. With 1 or 2 summer quarters of fee waivers this provides to the student 4 or 5 quarters of support.
- Awarding of financial aid will be made from the best qualified applicants based upon the following criteria:
- High cumulative grade point average in the undergraduate program. Also the appropriatenessand quality of the undergraduate program of studies in providing adequate preparation for thearea of graduate studies to be considered. (Priority to grade point average of 3.00 and above.)
- Miller Analogies Test (MAT) scores and/or Graduate Record Exam (GRE) verbal and
quantitative scores will be considered but not required, if overall grade point average is above a 2.90 overall or a 3.25 on the last 90 quarters of undergraduate work (4.00 point scale). A score is to your advantage for consideration.
- Evidence of special preparation, experience, or other professional contributions. The applicantshould describe the type and length of professional service, professional activities, research,writing, participation in professional organizations, or special projects. (If in a teaching program,priority will be given to those with teaching experience.)
- In instances where non-Department of Teacher Education funds (such as specific grants and projects) are utilized, specialand/or additional criteria may be employed for a graduate appointment.
- Any application for financial assistance that requires deviation from the above criteria must be considered on an individualbasis by the Graduate Committee. Any recommendations to waive a criterion must be based on compensatory factors clearlyarticulated by the Graduate Committee.
- Financial assistance in the form of Ohio University scholarships, fellowships, or associateships are not ordinarily awarded tofirst year international students in the Department of Teacher Education.
CRITERIA FOR AWARDING OF GRADUATE ASSOCIATESHIPS AND TUITION SCHOLARSHIPS
DOCTORAL STUDENTS
- Graduate associateship or tuition scholarship support for doctoral students ordinarily will be limited to not more than 9quarters. This will qualify the student for a maximum of 4 summer quarters of fee waivers in addition to the 9 quarters ofassistance. Such financial support is subject to satisfactory progress in the degree program.
- Awarding of financial aid will be made from the best qualified applicants based upon the following criteria:
- High cumulative grade point averages (3.00 or better) in the last 90 hours (60 semester hours) of theundergraduate program and high grade point average in the Master’s degree (3.50 or better) program. Alsothe appropriateness and Master’s degree programs in providing adequate preparation for the area of graduatestudies will be considered.
- High Graduate Record Exam (GRE) verbal and quantitative scores - minimum 1000. High scores on the MillerAnalogies Test (MAT) - minimum of 55.
- A minimum of two years of public school teaching and/or administrative experience or equivalent experience.(Three years of teaching experience preferred.)
- The applicant should describe the type and length of professional service, professional activities, research, writing,participation in professional organizations, or special projects.
- In instances where non-Department of Teacher Education funds (such as specific grants and projects) are unitized, specialand/or additional criteria may be employed for a graduate appointment.
- Normally, a doctoral student who has received a graduate associateship will be given preferential consideration forcontinuation of the appointment if good progress is being made toward the completion of the doctoral program. Thestudent’s progress must be assessed by the doctoral advisor and a report of progress provided in writing to the GraduateCommittee along with a specific recommendation from the advisor as to whether the student should be continued on agraduate appointment. The stipend for third year support is contingent upon the following conditions being met by thestudent:
- The completion of course work essential to the degree program as established by the Department of TeacherEducation requirements and the student’s doctoral committee. (This will not preclude the student’s enrolling incourse work during the third year.)
- The identification of a problem for the dissertation, and the approval of that problem by the student’s doctoralcommittee.
- The scheduling of the comprehensive examination for the fall quarter of the third year. (The comprehensiveexamination, of course, may be taken before the fall quarter of the third year.)
- Any application for a graduate appointment that requires deviation from the above criteria must be considered on anindividual basis by the Graduate Committee. Any recommendations to waive a criterion must be based on compensatoryfactors clearly articulated by the Graduate Committee.
- Financial assistance in the form of Ohio University scholarships, fellowships, or associateships are not ordinarily awardedto first year international students in the Department of Teacher Education.
