American Brigadier General William Hull invaded Canada from Detroit with an army mainly composed of militiamen, but he turned back after his supply lines were threatened in the battles of Brownstown and Monguagon.

5.  Label the map. Show the geographical information and label the arrows with information that indicates the origin and size of each group.

British Major General Isaac Brock sent false correspondence and allowed it to be captured by the Americans, saying they required only 5,000 Native warriors to capture Detroit. Hull was afraid of North American Indians and some tribes' practice of scalping.

The Americans attempted an attack across the Niagara River, but suffered a crushing defeat at Queenston Heights. Brock was killed during the battle. Canadian militia performed well. French-Canadians, who found the anti-Catholic stance of most of the United States troublesome, and United Empire Loyalists, who had fought for the Crown during the American Revolutionary War strongly opposed the American invasion.

At the start of 1813, the American naval squadron on Lake Ontario and Chauncey decided to attack York instead. This was the Provincial capital of Upper Canada, but far less important as a military base. The American forces attacked and burned York (now called Toronto), the capital of Upper Canada, including the Parliament Buildings.

The Battle of the Thames was a decisive victory for the Americans that led to the re-establishment of American control over the Northwest frontier for the remainder of the war. Chief Tecumseh put up a brave fight but was killed in battle.

The British and Canadians sought revenge on the United States for the destruction they had caused on the capital of Upper Canada (now Ontario) at York (now Toronto) after the Battle of York in 1813. The advance guard of British troops marched to Capitol Hill intending to destroy as much of it as possible. They proceeded to trash and burn the Treasury, the White House, the Senate, the House of Representatives and the Library of Congress.

In signing the treaty, the Americans ended up abandoning their primary goal in starting the war: to expand their territory by seizing control of the British colonies to the north in what would later become Canada. Fightingcontinued for several weeks after signing the treaty because news of the treaty took time to reach North America.
