Director of Health, Safety and Environment

The Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) department at Marine Atlantic is responsible for leading the development, promotion and implementation of health, safety, security and environmental protection programs throughout the company. This includes responsibility for Marine Atlantic’s programs established pursuant to the Canada Labour Code Part II and the International Safety Management Code (ISM). The Department is also responsible for security and emergency preparedness programs including Marine Atlantic’s programs established pursuant to the Domestic Ferry Security Regulations and International Ship & Port Facility Security Code. The department is responsible for implementing and monitoring environmental strategies, policies and programs that ensure regulatory compliance. With a focus on employee health, the department develops programs that create awareness, motivation and monitoring of company-wide total wellbeing initiatives.

Based in Port aux Basques, NL or North Sydney, NS and reporting directly to the President and CEO, the Director of Health, Safety and Environment is a key member of the leadership team who through collaboration with internal partners will cultivate and drive a culture of health and safety throughout the organization.

Responsibilities:

Having proven success in providing corporate-wide health and safety

program implementation and leadership in large complex organizations,

the Director will be responsible for creating, developing and promoting a

health, safety, security and environmental culture throughout the

organization and will drive the effective development and implementation

of the Safety Management System. Familiar with ISM, the Director will

oversee research and analysis initiatives related to the development, implementation and evaluation of corporate policies, processes and programs. The incumbent will also ensure guidance of the corporate security division and support the strategic direction of the organization’s security plans.

This position will provide expert knowledge and senior leadership on matters related to safety and environmental strategy, and will ensure that initiatives identified and implemented will facilitate the continuous improvement of Marine Atlantic’s safety performance and result in corporate compliance with all applicable environmental and safety regulations. The Director will be expected to build and manage a highly skilled, cohesive and collaborative team, and will oversee the performance management planning and KPIs for the department. This position will also manage the workers compensation and disability management programs within the organization and lead health and wellness initiatives for delivering wellness strategies and programs to promote employees’ health.

Education:

Our ideal candidate will possess:

  • A degree from a recognized university in the area of safety management, industrial hygiene, industrial risk management or related field.

OR

  • A combination of equivalent education, job-related training and experience in a related position.

Canadian Registered Safety Professional Designation is a strong asset.

Requirements:

Our ideal candidate will have/be:

  • A minimum 10 years of progressive leadership/managerial experience within the Health, Safety and Environment capacity and in the collaborative development and successful implementation of comprehensive HSE programs and processes. Experience in marine operations is considered a strong asset.
  • Extensive knowledge of health, safety, security and environmental laws and regulations with the ability to develop, implement and champion value based HSE programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to build, maintain, and lead the HSE function in a complex work environment.
  • Proven authentic leader, with demonstrated ability to build collaborations and partnerships.
  • People focused leader with the ability to engage stakeholders and effectively communicate to a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Skill and ability to lead organizational change in a manner that fosters collaboration among organizational stakeholders and achieves the strategic objectives of the corporation.
  • Strong capacity for strategic planning, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Human resources capabilities: ensuring a positive work environment,

forecasting staffing requirements, hiring, providing performance

management and staff development, and managing a unionized

environment.
