DESIGN CONSIDERATION OF STEEL ELEMENTS AGAINST DAMAGE BY FIRE

BY

THONG KIAN SEAN

ABSTRACT

Steel is a type of material that performs badly in fire. At 550ºC the yield has fallen to approximately 0.5 of its value at normal temperatures; that is, it has reached its working stress and failure occurs under working loads.

This report is given a brief ideal on how to design the steel element against damage by fire. In this report, it covered three sub topics, there are Calculation Of Temperature, Design Of Non-composite steelwork and methods Of Protection.

Each of the sub topics present the methods and theory that had been used in designing the steel elements against damage by fire.

DESIGN OF A COUNTERFORTRETAINING WALL

BY

SHIM FOONG CHIEN

ABSTRACT

This project is intended primarily to serve as an subject for the undergraduate civil engineering students to complete their Diploma in Civil Engineering Program. The purpose of this project course was to enables the students to do design, research, analysis and making personal decision about a given project title based on the knowledge that they gained so far. Upon the successful completion of this project course, students will have applied a range of techniques for generating, evaluating and selecting design concepts to meet specified requirements. It also helps the students to better of understood the nature of Engineering Design Concept and acquired a range of interpersonal skills.

The counterfort retaining wall that I designed was make up by reinforced concrete, 8.00m in high, located along the highway, which retains a backfill with a horizontal top surface and consisting of backfill with density δ= 1500 and angle of repose α = 36º. Before I go thru the design part, I realized that several factors has to be consider before designing a counterfort retaining wall; soil condition, types of backfill, surcharge loads, foundation stability and others are all the factors take should take into consideration. I also applied the formula that I learned in the textbooks when doing my calculation part and do some possible checking for unforeseen failure.

THE DESIGN OF A SUSPENSION BRIDGE

BY

LEE KAI MING

ABSTRACT

The purpose of designing this bridge is because that I wanted to introduce it all Malaysians. Since there is no such bridges in Malaysia, so I would just suggest to all peoples so that they will get familiar with this type bridge and upgrade the standard for Malaysia technology in civil engineering. From, the information that I gather I found that the only sample which we can find in Malaysia is only available in Sunway lagoon, although it is just a small one compare those in U.S but its function is just to be a sample to us. So that those who interested in designing such bridge can just make us the bridges in Sunway as a reference. There I as INTI student will first like to introduce it to all people in our nation.

DESIGN OF FLYOVER

BY

LEONG WING HONG

ABSTRACT

In this project, I will introduce and show you about the design, analysis and calculation of a Flyover (HighwayBridge). The reinforcement concrete highway bridge design is commonly used in our country, especially in highway. For developing country, the traffic problem is increasing, e.g. Traffic jam. To solve the traffic problem, we have many alternative, one of its is to build a Flyover to let the vehicle cross more smoothly. So inside this project you will see the construction of a Flyover.
