Project Title:The Six Biomes of the World

Developer:John Lager

The project in a sentence…

In one sentence, what is this project about?

This will be used as a lesson supplement to a unit on biomes.

Audience

Describe the relevant characteristics of the intended learners (e.g., grade level, special needs or advanced).

Fifth grade students – twenty-four children, two special needs…

Instructional Objectives

What do you want the learner to learn? (Be sure to reference the subject matter as well as appropriate curriculum standards.)

The learner will go beyond what has been read in the text to discover exactly where each biome is located, re-visit their distinctive features (plants, animals, etc.), and see more real-world pictures of each biome. They will then be able to test their knowledge and skills to distinguish between the six and more…From the Michigan Curriculum Framework document, this knowledge set exists minimally within, but is HUGE in fifth grade…:
Science/Strand V/Content Standard 1/Elementary
Benchmark 1
Describe major features of the Earth’s surface.

Pedagogy

What are your instructional strategies? (Be sure to design and include at least two different strategies, such as, but not limited to, inductive and deductive.) Briefly describe the flow of interaction for the learner.

The instructional strategies I will use for this project will be Rule-Eg and simulation/problem-solving. The student will view and interact with a presentation that will show them textual information, pictures, video, and sound clips that will develop their knowledge and hopefully guide them to answering correctly the questions in the follow-up quiz.

Active Response

What will you ask the learner to do to demonstrate understanding?

Learner will show what he/she has gained from the interactive PowerPoint, and will also attempt some quiz questions that were addressed in the regular in-class lesson on biomes. They will practice their new knowledge on the PowerPoint itself and then follow up by doing a quiz that will be printed out upon completion

Feedback

How will you give the learner feedback on the actions taken?

Students will get immediate feedback as they work through the interactive PowerPoint and will get a graded quiz the day after completion.
