Minutes of the March 29th Community Garden Meeting
Attendees were Paul and Nancy Chamberlain, Kathy Williamson, Joe and Mary
Fund Raising
Kathy will continue to seek additional funds as well as equipment for the garden.
Letters will be sent to area hardware stores including: True-Value, Ace, Drillen True
Value Hardware, Lowe's and Home Depot. The letters will be mailed out this week.
Additional funds might be needed for the building of the shed. The cost of the
lumber, roofing etc. might be supported through the current grant funds. However, Joe
Capobianco has agreed to take the list of needed materials to Hammond Lumber to get
an estimate of material costs. It will them be determined if additional grant funds will be
necessary to support the supplies and materials needed to complete the building of the
shed on the property. A large thank you goes to John MacDonough who has donated
his time & staff time to building this shed in a very short period of time.
Application
The garden application was reviewed with slight changes in wording. One of the
issues was the “name” of the garden. It appears that “Garden of Eatin” is a large brand
name for an organic food company. Therefore, it is in the best interest of the
organization to change the name and create our own logo. The name was changed to
“The Garden of Eaten”. Other changes made to the application included adding a cost
summary sheet and a limit on the number of small 2’ x 4’ plots that families can request.
The application will include a link for all parties to review the guide lines on line.
Discussion was held about running the application in the bulletin on April 9th and 10th.
The letter of information will run on the front of the flyer and the application form will be
printed on the back of the flyer. Nancy will make corrections and has offered to help
create the logo design for the garden. Plots will be distributed on a first come, first-
served basis. Participants will be notified, and a meeting will be set to review guidelines
with all new “gardeners” in early May. The application will include a link for all parties to
review the guide lines on line.
April 2nd workday:
It is important that helpers set forward on Saturday to help spread the much-needed
top soil. Broadway Gardens have been very generous in donating this large amount of
soil. The truck will drop the dirt in the parking lot at St. Max on Wednesday, March 30th.
Since no members were able to be there to meet and to greet the driver from Broadway
Gardens, Kathy suggested that Paul contact Mike (custodian) at St. Max to assist. Joe
agreed to stop by in the afternoon to check on the delivery. On Saturday, volunteers are
to bring shovels and wheel-barrels in hope of making a large job manageable in less time.
Next Meeting: April 11th - Time and location will be sent as a reminder
