Avian Influenza: prevention on AI infection and spread
2nd page
Avian Influenza is an infectious disease affecting birds but it also may transmit to humans.
Highly Pathogenic strain H5N1 of Avian Influenza is dangerous for humans since it may cause pandemics.
Avian Influenza steadily spreads around the world even across continental borders and species.

This disease may cause death. But the disease can be prevented through adherence to rules of safe behavior and personal hygiene.
Avian Influenza transmits to humans through immediate contact with infected birds or their feathers and through consumption of improperly cooked infected meat and eggs.
How to protect yourself from Avian Influenza?
-Avoid contacts with wild birds. Remember that the only wild birds easily accessible for contact with humans arethose weakened by a disease. Warn your children and other people about that.
-If you find any dead or sick birds report them to a veterinary medicine specialist. Do not touch them and do not even come close to them.

-Do not play with birds and nestlings, do not take them home even to protect from bad weather.
-Do not swim in open waterbeds in the areas where cases of birds’ disease or death where registered or quarantine measures were imposed. This increases the risk of AI infection.
-Always wash your hands with soap, particularly after coming home from out in the street (you can also use cleaning wipes containing disinfecting or alcohol components).

-When cooking keep the food prepared for consumption separately from the raw untreated products (not treated with heat in particular).
-Do not consume raw eggs. Wash eggs with soap before boiling.
-Remember, AI virus dies in food products if they are wholly heat treated at temperature 700C for no less than 5 minutes.
-If you feel ill, have fever and sneezing or are short of breath, visit a doctor immediately. Antiviral drugs are most effective in the initial 2 days of disease and in some cases within the initial 8 hours only.
