Issue 13: June 2014
And so it begins!
Councillor Marianne Overton MBE took time out of her hectic schedule and joined us on a sunny Sunday evening to officially start us off with the building of our new extension. The builders, Active8, are starting with the construction of the new kitchen area to the west elevation of the Hall. Work is now well underway, as no doubt many of you will have seen, and we look forward to watching its progress over the coming months. The Hall will still be in use whilst work is going on and the building site is securely fenced off, but please do take care when entering and leaving the premises.

The Ring of Peace
"What a truly fascinating simply wonderful concept of the Harmston Village Hall Committee. It has all the hallmarks of something truly significant in all its simplicity, yet with the potential to touch so many minds and hearts around the world. People these days are so taken up with the trivial complexities of their lives and we all need to be reminded that simple actions by ordinary people can still change the world"
M Barber – Duffield, England
This spectacular and spontaneous comment was sent in by one of the volunteerswho are going to pass on our message of peace in a telephone relay around the world on October 4th. The Harmston Ring of Peace is catching on and now 32 countries and 63 messengers have signed up - our target is 40 countries representing the number of countries involved in World War 1 and 100 messengers to mark the 100 years that have passed since the war started.
This highly ambitious project has won admirers around the world for Harmston, and the World War 1 commemorative evening to be held in the Hall on October 4th should be spectacular, with the first call in the Ring being made at 7:00 PM by Alan Humphries, with the final call back to the hall anticipated to be around 11PM.
Full details will be given in subsequent additions of Harmston Matters.
A Full House for Hickman & Cassidy
What a fabulous evening of music and laughter! Hickman and Cassidy performed to a ‘capacity crowd’ at the Hall on 1st June and really raised the roof. With a brilliant array of songs and plenty of dry-humoured banter a great evening was had by all. A lovely way to ‘sign-off’ our Rural Touring season, prior to our grand re-launch in August – and the tidy sum of £650 raised for Operation Heartbeat on the night too!
The Big Breakfast
The committee rallied together again on Sunday 25th May to provide a sumptuous full English breakfast with all the trimmings. The Hall was full to bursting and breakfast was enjoyed by some 80 villagers. Total raised on the day £300 – and a big thank you to Paul Pepperdine for the kind donation of the sausages, bacon and eggs!
Jam Jar June
It’s not too late to start collecting your spare change if you haven’t already! Jars will be collected at the special Jamboree event or you can call Gill on 721954 to arrange collection. This is our only ‘donation’ event each year so please dig deep and let’s see if we can beat last year’s fantastic total!
Any pianists out there?
Harmston Harmonies are reuniting to perform at the upcoming WW1 commemoration on 4th October and desperately need a pianist. With their usual musician Paul being away they need someone to accompany rehearsals at intervals from now onwards as well as on the evening itself. If you can help please contact Gill on 721954 or email address below.
Can you help?
We desperately need a megaphone/loudhailer for the Jamboree – do you have one you could lend us or know of anyone who might? Please contact Gill on the number above.

Editor’s Note
It’s great to see work well underway now at the Hall. Please bear with us at this time – there will be some upheaval and (whilst we’ll do our best to keep it to a minimum!) there will be some mess around the Hall whilst work is going on. Also, mums and dads please remind children that the building site is strictly out of bounds – it is fenced off for good reason! Many thanks.
