WHAT HAPPENED LAST MONTH

MINUTES FROM NOVEMBER 13th MEETING:

CLVN President, Diann Marsalek called the meeting to order at 7:45p.m. due elevator problems at the hospital. Officers in attendance: Terry Diamond- Vice-President, Laura Kotelman-Recording Secretary, Norb Tatro-Treasurer and Area Director-Marie Poppy. Excused officers were James Bail-CorrespondingSecretary, Aaron Harkin, Frank Nussbaum, Jim Masini and Jeannie Sticher-Area Directors. A quorum was present.

Presentation by Martin Cody of Wine Styles at 1433 W. Belmont: Wine Styles recently celebrated their first anniversary in the neighborhood. Cody told the group there are wine tastings every Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the store. Free wine and food are offered at the wine tasting. A wine club is also offered through the store for a $35 fee per month and the member receives a $50 bottle of wine per month. The store sells many wines under $25 a bottle. Also the store sells gift baskets, holds parties in and outside the store and will work with the client. Cody has a knowledgeable staff and will be happy to assist us on any wine purchase.

Presentation by Norman Groetzinger of the LakeViewCounselingCenter at 3225 N. Sheffield:Groetzinger has been with the center for 32 years and a long time resident of the LakeView community. The center started with a $62,000 budget and two staff. The budget is now $4 million and there are 55 staff. Approximately three million of the budget comes from state funding which has been cut 10% or $330,000. Some positions that were open are now frozen due to the budget cuts. The programs focus on mental health and substance abuse issues. The clientele includes older adults, families with domestic violence issues, Latino services and adolescent/child programs. The case load is not expected to decrease and may increase due to the problems from a bad economical situation. The Center also works closely with AdvocateIllinoisMasonicHospital. Public donations would gladly be accepted. A motion was made by Robert Lombardo and seconded by Terry Diamond to donate $200 to the CounselingCenter. The motion passed unanimously.

Approval of Minutes: A motion was made byJoe Ravelingeen to approve the Octoberminutes which was seconded by Karen Gaus. The motion passed unanimously to accept the minutes.

LVCC Report: Marsalek reported LVCC held its fundraiser the Founder’s Club (formerly known as the Century Club) on Tuesday November 11th at Harry Caray’s. A portion of the ticket sales will be sent to Veteran’s Groups. A nondenominationalThanksgiving service will be held on November 20that 7:30 at Bethlehem United Church of Christ at 2746 N. Magnolia. Individuals attending will be asked to donate food items or cash which will be donated to the Lake View Food Pantry. LVCC will be collecting financial donations for Operation Mitten. All funds raised are used to purchase winter apparel items for children. The items are provided to needy children by the police on patrol in the 19th and 23rd District. Send donations to LVCC at 867 W. Buckingham.

Treasurer’s Report: Tatro reported our account holds$11,336.00.Tatro transferred $3000 from the savings into the checking account so we will have free checking. The Halloween Party with AgassizSchool raised $348 for the Weisman Park Renovation fund. CLVN also raised $175 for the Friends of Agassiz. The CLVN executive committee met and approved to obtain additional insurance for the organization including general liability and event insurance. Poppy and Bail researched the issue. Tatro is obtaining quotes and it may cost us $800 for the additional insurance. The Director’s & Officer’s Liability insurance was a budgeted item.

Alderman’s Report: Rohan reported that ticket sale information is on the 44th Ward website for the January 1st hockey game at Wrigley Field. A public lottery is open for tickets. Rohan announced she is leaving her job. Marsalek thanked her for hr service, attending the meetings and addressing our concerns. CLVN wished Rohan much success on her new employment.

CDDC Report:Poppy reported the last meeting of the CDDC addressed the proposed development at Addison and Clark. The developer’s first proposal was too large and he returned with a second proposal even larger than the first proposal. A subcommittee of the CDDC was formed to address the newest proposal. The recommendation of the subcommittee to the CDDC was to allow the developer to build the larger of the two level zoning which is B3-3 with a top height of 71 feet verses the 105 he had requested. The committee also recommended the developer reduce the FAR from 4.18 to 3.0. There was a strong desire on the part of the council to preserve the streetscape on Clark at three floors and have the bulk of the building set back from the street. The group liked the idea of a hotel but was not sure on the other large retail proposed. The Council was not particularly in favor of the rental units as proposed because of the potential frat house or corporate party that could be created. The idea of housing was not ruled out. However, affordable housing would have to be a component. The project now stands with no affordable housing component. The developer so far has been non committal for his financing. The Alderman was to meet with the developer and convey the community direction. More meetings will be held on the proposal. All meetings are open to the public and the next meeting will be held on December 3rdat Ann Sathers at 909 W. Belmont at 6:30 p.m.

Announcements: Marsalek reported Central Lake View Merchants (CLMA) will hold a fashion show at Cubby Bear, 1059 W. Addison on November 15th at 6:30 p.m. and the cost is $10. A family reading night will be held at GreeleySchool, 832 W. Sheridan on November 18th from 6-7:30 p.m.A midnight walk with the police will occur on Friday November 21 at Spin 800 W. Belmont and proceed down streets in the district. Some permits have been issued for porches and electrical repairs. A four story building will be built at 1121 W. Belmont with three residential units and first floor commercial. A toy drive will be held at Murphy’s Bleachers on Dec. 5th at 7p.m. Individuals must bring a wrapped gift that is marked for a boy or girl. Donors will receive a raffle ticket for two drawings (Winner must be present). Food, refreshments and music are provided. The next meeting is Dec. 11th and Advocate Illinois Masonic will make a presentation. There will be a holiday reception after the meeting. Please bring non perishable items of food or money to the meeting that can be donated to the Lake View Pantry. A nominating committee will be named at the January meeting to seek candidates for offices for CLVN for the March election. The 2009 Cubs schedule is locatedon their website with tentative dates. The National Hockey League will hold a hockey game at Wrigley Field on Jan. 1, 2009 and the community has requested community tickets be set aside. More details to follow. We have a new business member, Uncle Fatty’s on Sheffield. Elizabeth Dale is the new liaison to CLVN from Advocate. Marsalek introduced Dale and indicated CLVN looks forward to working with her. Dues will be due January 1, 2009. Marsalek made a motion which was seconded by Joe Ravelingeen for CLVN to donate $50 to Operation Mitten and $200 to the Lake View Pantry. The motion passed with only one member in opposition. Marsalek indicated these two items were budgeted for the 2008 budget.

WeismanPark Report: Poppy reported that Mrs. Weisman, widow of whom the park is named after, presented a check for the park renovation for $500. No figures were available for the sale at Noodles yesterday as a park fundraiser and further information will be provided at the next meeting. November 15th will start the GIFT CARD promotion through the Lake View East Chamber. The card runs through January 15, 2009. 20% of sales will go toward the renovation fund. Cards can be purchased in $10 to $500 denominations. These cards will not have an expiration date and can be used at almost 100stores/shops in the area (the list is posted at The card is good at restaurants, pharmacies, grocery stores, salons, theaters, coffee shops, retailers and more. Cards can be purchased online at or visit the chamber at 3138 N. Broadway. Order forms are available at go to the Parks/Weisman Renovation and follow the link. All card fulfillments will be handled by the Lake View East Chamber. Poppy is pleased with the committee that has formed which includes parents in the area. The group is planning fundraising activities for 2009.

CTA Report: Tatro reported the Diversey exit should be open mid November. The Wellington station should be open summer 2009. The triple track at Belmont should be completed in December. There are no plans for the former station building at Diversey.

New Business:Price offered thanks for the good work Streets and Sanitation performed on George. Heald was not happy with the leaves left behind on Seminary after street cleaning. Marsalek indicated Streets and Sanitation sent information that leaves should be raked and bagged. The bags should be left in the alley outside of the trash cans. Streets and San will come periodically during the week to pick up the yard waste. The street cleaning machines do not have the capability to remove the leaves. Poppy inquired about the construction on the 900 block of Diversey. Marsalek will look into this and there were no notices of nay permits for this project. Heald asked about the status of a proposed development at 1034-36 W. Wellington. Marsalek indicated that no information has been given to her and she has not been contacted by any developer. Marsalek contacted the Alderman’s office to see if they had any information and she did not receive a response. The neighbors to the west of the property are circulating a petition opposed to any zoning request. Another member asked about sanctions for residents that use other individuals recycling cans. Call 311 or 312-744-5028 and a citation can be written to those using your trash can. A suggestion was made to keep the blue can in yards so others could not access the container. A request was made to look at the alley behind the 3100 block of Kenmore due to cans being filled frequently. Poppy asked what could be done on a troubled building at 1041 W. Wolfram and if CLVN could contact Streets and Sanitation about removing couches that have been dumped in the backyard. This has created a haven for rats and become a problem for the surrounding neighbors. Several requests have been made by the neighbors to the Alderman’s office and Streets and Sanitation with no action taken. Marsalek indicated the police have no authority now as there is no criminal conduct at the location. Marsalek will contact Streets and Sanitation to see if nay citations could be written. Kotelman made an inquiry as to the recycling to be done by buildings with 6 or more units. These buildings should have a private hauler who has a recycling program. The building association should have a recycling plan. Call 312-744-5028 if this is an issue with a neighboring building using your recycling cans.
