2017-2018 / ASD ENHANCED TRAINING
New for September 2017
LASCS have developeda five session enhanced training courseaimed at all those who are teaching or supporting children and young people in primary and secondary schools with significant social communication difficulties or Autism Spectrum Disorder.
This course will be delivered fortnightlywith set tasks and will include two school visits by one of the specialist teachers – Elaine Charleston or Jacky Bennison
Attendees will self-evaluate their current skills and knowledge, set their own learning goals and reflect on the impact of their practicetowards the end of the course.
The children or young people and their families will have an opportunity to provide feedback to staffabout practice on supporting, teaching and learning.
Dates and times are:

This course is a hands on practical learning journey to gain in depth knowledge and skills rather than an academic course, although there are supporting reading materials available online. Sessions are:

2017-2018 / ASD AWARENESS TRAINING
New for September 2017
LASCS are delivering their Understanding Autism training, which is still available for school’s INSET or staff meetings,at Newton Children’s Centre on a regular basis.
It is aimed at all those who are teaching or supporting children and young people in primary and secondary schools with significant social communication difficulties or Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Any staff who have not attended an ASD awareness course previously are welcome to attend. Although it will be aimed at teachers and learning support staff, mid-day assistants, volunteers and any other staff working with children are encouraged to attend.
Code of Practice 2015 states there is an obligation to have at least an awareness and basic understanding of the different Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. With about 1.1% of children in St Helens with a diagnosis of ASD it is likely that every teacher will teach a child with significant social communication difficulties or autism.

2017-2018 / UNDERSTANDING AUTISM
Target Group: All school staff and other professionals

Length: 1.5 – 3hrs (tailored to meet your needs)

Course content: This training is a broad over view of autism, diagnosis, behaviour and successful strategies. It will give attendees a greater understanding of autism spectrum disorder, tell-tale signs and how best to make reasonable adjustments for the child or young person.
Objectives:

Further develop your understanding of autism

Consider the use of a range of visual and organisational strategies

Understand how you can change the way you communicate with and manage pupils with autism

2017-2018 / PLAYTIME & AUTISM

Target Group: All primary school staff, lunchtime assistants/supervisors, play leaders, breakfast and afterschool club staff

Length: 1.5 hours

Course content: This training can be modified for the target audience. It will help all staff have a clearer understanding of autism and play, social difficulties and how to reduce social anxiety through a proactive approach
Objectives:

To know autism is a disability with social interactions and understanding

To understand some reasons for high levels of anxiety

To reflect on how autism can affect children in unstructured situations

To know some successful strategies to use at playtimes and beyond

2017-2018 / TEACCH –PRACTIONER’S ADVICE

Course content: Inspired by the TEACCH® Autism Program in North Carolina, this structured approach is already being used extensively in special schools and mainstream classrooms. This training focuses on successful, well researched strategies which support children with their learning, organisational skills and independence.
Objectives:

To raise awareness of the elements of TEACCH, how they increase independence and promote learning and high self esteem

To experience a TEACCH work system

To empower staff to provide a TEACCH learning approach for children or young people using available resources

Course content:The Incredible 5 Point Scale is a tool to help children visualise their emotions, understand their emotional responses and illustrate solutions and strategies. The training will show you the conversational process of creating the Incredible 5 Point Scale and how it can be used across a range of situations

Course content: Social Stories™ were developed by Carol Gray and are used throughout the world to support children with autism and social communication difficulties understand the world they live in. This training will provide you with the basic understanding of Social Stories™ and the means to write them. You will get an opportunity to have a go with colleagues. Parents and carers are welcome too!

To know how to incorporate feelings, thoughts and solutions into the story

2017-2018 / COMIC STRIP CONVERSATIONS
Target group: All teaching and support staff/other professionals

Length:1 hour

Course content: A comic strip conversation is a conversation between two or more people using simple illustrations in a comic strip format. They show children and young people how to behave in a socially acceptable manner and conform to social expectations. They are used to give the young person an alternative way of thinking. A very effective problem-solving tool! Ideal for teaching assistants, learning mentors, pastoral leaders and heads of house.
Objectives:

To know what a comic strip conversation is
To know how to ‘draw’ the comic strip
To know how to incorporate feelings, thoughts and a solution to the problem

Course content:Person centred approaches are a range of tools and organisational attitudes that have been developed over several decades to offer a more personalised and outcomes-focused way of meeting individual’s additional support needs. Understanding the difficulties young people with autism have in making choices and knowing ways to engage them is crucial to their future plans. Good practice for all SEND young people.

To know the difficulties young people with ASD have with making choices
To know about person centred planning
To know some resources to help young people plan for their future

2017-2018 / REDUCING ANXIETY

Course content:Anxiety often goes hand in hand with autism and can be misunderstood within the classroom and around school. Understanding how anxiety can impact on children & young people’s learning and what strategies can be used to support them is key to their success. Mindfulness, CBT and many more approaches will be discussed.

•To consider the different approaches commonly used for children with anxiety
