CLASSROOM RULES, PROCEDURES, AND GRADING POLICIES
INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION
Mr. Doviak Mr. Brebner
After School Hours: Check with for availability.
The following is a list of classroom rules, procedures, and grading policies for 9th grade Social Studies. Follow these guidelines to ensure a successful school year!
RULES
1. Be Engaged—Contribute to class as often as you can, ask questions whenever you don’t understand something or would like to know more, and make an effort to learn something new every day!
2. Be Respectful – Follow the Golden Rule: Treat others as you wish to be treated. Be kind and courteous to both your classmates and teacher. If there is a problem, let me know immediately so I help you solve it.
3. Be on Time – Be in your seat and ready to work BEFORE the bell rings. Don’t be late! Excessive lates will result in a deduction from your participation grade; according to school policy, 3 lates are equivalent to a cut and warrant detention.
*On most days you will be required to begin working on a Do Now.
4. Be prepared – You need the following items with you EVERY DAY:
1. Your online textbook information
2. Your Notebook (2 sections, 1 for handouts, worksheets, graded assignments, etc., and 1 for notes and written work)
3. Blue or Black pen(s) and/or pencil(s)
4. An Agenda Book/Homework Pad
NOTE: I will provide materials for class in exchange for collateral.
5. Be Positive! It is possible to have fun and work at the same time, and that starts with a great attitude!
COURSE PROCEDURES/RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Homework-Homework will be assigned on a regular basis (1-2 times per week) and must be brought to class the day it is due (unless you are absent) to receive credit. Late Homework is not accepted unless it is being graded! Expect some short review/check-up work, and/or reading, as well as online work; your grade is averaged at the end of the marking period based on assignments missed.
o Homework completed: 100%
o Homework mostly completed: 90%
o Homework half-completed: 80%
o Homework partially completed: 70%
o Homework not competed/attempted: 0%
NOTE: Parents/Guardians will be notified for excessive missed Homework Assignments on Progress Reports and Marking Period Report Cards.
NOTE: KEEP ALL HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS UNLESS OTHERWISE TOLD!
2. Minor Assessments –will be assigned on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. These are short assessments that will primarily focus on one particular section or topic. They include:
o quizzes
o reading comprehension checks
o writing (response journal, timed writing, etc.)
o open-book, in-class assignments
o small-scale research activities
o Do-Now’s/Entrance Tickets/Exit Tickets
o marking period notebook checks
3. Major Assessments—will be assigned in advance, and are summative in nature, focusing on units, chapters, or major topics. They include:
o tests
o projects
o research papers
o prose-constructed response timed writing
o research projects/presentations
NOTE: Test and quizzes will NOT be made up during class time. They will be administered after school. Students are responsible for scheduling the make-up appointment
NOTE: Projects are to be turned in the day they are due (unless excused); failure to do will result in a loss of 10 points each day it is late.
4. Participation is observed and recorded on a consistent basis. A rubric that highlights specific criteria will be used to calculate your average, and is attached. Participation grades will be assigned two times per marking period. You will receive a graded rubric on your participation both at progress report time and again in the final week of each marking period.
5. Make-Up Work – All students are responsible for any work missed due to an absence, trip, early dismissal, etc. It is not my responsibility to track students down! As a high school college prep student, expectations are increased. Along with your independence and maturity comes individual responsibility and accountability. Late make-up work will not be accepted at the end of the marking period. As per school policy, students are granted two days to make up work for each day of class missed.
