St. Michael & St. Francis Bulletin May 9th & 10th, 2015 Pastor: Fr. Harry Tully
Sixth Sunday of Easter
TRUE FRIENDSHIP
True friendship takes hard work. Friendship entails walking with another through life’s moments of joy as well as moments of deep disappointment and failure. Friendships need constant nurturing. Friends need to be present to one another. Friends need to talk. Friends need to be honestly critical. Friends need time to connect. In today’s Gospel, the Lord Jesus calls his followers “friends.” If we count ourselves among the followers of the Lord, this means that in baptism we have entered a friendship with the Lord Jesus. In order to nurture our friendship with the Lord, we commit ourselves to walking with him through life’s joys and disappointments. Most of us have people in our lives with whom we have lost touch. We know the experience of the diminished bond of friendship. Most of us can also admit that we really have only so much time and energy to commit to nurturing one or a few real friendships. How do we nurture our friendship with the Lord Jesus?
NURTURING OUR FRIENDSHIP WITH THE LORD
If we believe that Christ is truly present in his word, in the Eucharist, in those who minister to us, and in the gathered assembly of believers, we are assured of finding many opportunities to be present to the Lord. So often, we miss these opportunities and our friendship with the Lord becomes strained. Perhaps today is the day to recommit ourselves to strengthening our friendship with the Lord, who chose us in baptism to be his friend. The root of friendship, of course, is selfless love. Today we are called to bask in the love of God—to feel God’s loving presence through the experience of worship and the company of those dedicated to sharing in God’s love. Let us rejoice in the love shown to us by God.
Today’s Readings: Acts 10:25–26, 34–35, 44–48; Psalm 98:1–4; 1 John 4:7–10; John 15:9–17

Pastor’s Corner
Dear Parishioners,
"You are my friends if you do what I command you"
Often times when we hear the command it bears a negative connotation. The Ten Commandments comes to mind, "You Shall NOT....." But the command Jesus calls us to is not a negative but a positive statement. "Love one another as I love you." What a wonderful challenge to accept from the One who calls us 'Friends'. I say challenge because it isn't as easy as it sounds. Because we are all different, because we have different backgrounds and different opinions and attitudes, it isn't always easy to love. It is not impossible but it is not as easy as "not stealing". Jesus knows us inside and out and knows what we can and can't do, but loves us non-the-less. He shows us through His own suffering and death what God can and will do if we remove the obstacles that block us from seeing each other as He sees us. So, let's take up the command and strive with His help to live life as His friends.
Next Sunday is the Feast of the Ascension. In our Archdiocese the traditional Ascension Thursday celebration has been moved to the Sunday following that Thursday.
The Following weekend is the feast of Pentecost, the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and on us also. In some places it is customary to wear red clothing on that day as a sign of a Church full of the fire of the Holy Spirit. May we be consumed by that holy fire!
God bless and keep up the 'good' work
Fr. Tully

Question of the Week
Fifth Sunday of Easter
The sound of Alleluias fill the 50 days of Easter Sunday to Pentecost as we give thanks for the gift of our salvation. The Easter Triduum recalls the passion and resurrection of Christ in the sacred journey from Holy Thursday to Easter Vigil. “Dying he destroyed our death. Rising he restored our life.”
Theme: Love one another..
Step 1: Listen to the Word—What line in this reading caught your ear? What sense do you get about God as you listen to the Word proclaimed today?
Step two: Look into your Life.
Children: In what way do you experience God’s love, offered to you through family, friends, and teachers?
