Job Description
Scott Valley Swimming and Tennis Club is seeking a dedicated, experienced Head Coach to organize, coach, and lead its Marin Swim League swim team, the Scott Valley Sea Serpents and to organize and instruct other Scott Valley swimming and aquatic programs.
Qualifications
· Prior swim coaching experience and knowledge of aquatic/swim team management are required.
· Must be a member of USA Swimming and maintain a Coach's Card.
Preferred, but not required:
· American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) Level III qualification.
· Experience coaching in the Marin Swim League (MSL) or other local swim leagues.
· Knowledge of Team Unify web program.
Responsibilities
The Scott Valley Swim and Tennis Club (SVSTC) Head Coach (HC) will manage and develop swim programs and train staff to create a safe and enjoyable atmosphere at the SVSTC pools for members and their guests.
1. Outlook:
· Be an enthusiastic supporter of all swimmers.
· Model good sportsmanship and leadership. Teach swimmers how to practice good sportsmanship and responsibility in and out of the pool.
· Encourage and welcome SVSTC members of all ages to join aquatic programs.
2. Swim Program Coaching and Instruction:
· Oversee a set of programs that meets the needs of all swimmers, both children and adult, at all levels of ability.
· Be directly responsible for coaching the Sea Serpents Swim Team (SSST), Fall/Winter swim clinics and adult classes at SVSTC. The SSST is large team with a current roster of 175 swimmers with a large majority under the age of 13. The SSST trains from March through July with competitions beginning at the end of April, running weekly through July. The other swim programs are offered during the rest of the year and some are also offered concurrently with the SSST program.
· Plan, manage and execute all SSST practices and lesson plans for all clinics and classes. Arrive prior to practice to set-up lane lines and prepare pool deck for practice. Restore pool and pool deck after practice.
3. Personnel Management:
· Manage and supervise all aspects of aquatic coaching and instructional staff.
· Meet current coaching safety credential requirements. Ensure all assistants and swim staff are also properly credentialed, and that all certifications and paperwork for the assistants and swim staff are properly maintained.
· Research possible swim staff candidates with the assistance of the Swim Team Leadership Committee when needed. Make recommendation regarding staff jointly with the SVSTC General Manager (GM) to the Board of Directors.
4. Administration:
· Monitor and enforce all policies adopted by the Board to balance the pool usage needs of the recreational swim, lap swimmers, lessons and swim team.
· Work with the GM, lifeguards, swim coaches and instructors to ensure the observance of stringent safety procedures.
· Work successfully with the SSST President(s), all volunteer leadership committees, Board of Directors and coaching staff.
· Work with the GM to schedule all SSST practices and events, Fall/Winter clinics, and HC-taught-private swim lessons to meet the guidelines of pool usage set by the SVSTC Board of Directors.
· Attend any Swim Team Committee, Marin Swim League and/or Board meetings when requested. Attends Swim Team Coaches meetings.
· Be responsible for maintaining a current SSST roster, attendance roster and other administrative duties as they pertain to the team.
· Be responsible for maintaining a current Fall/Winter swim clinic roster and other administrative duties as they pertain to the program.
· Track and maintain statistics for each SSST member to appropriately recognize and reward individual and team achievement.
· Give priority to SVSTC members first and then to other SSST members second for swim lessons and aquatic programs.
· Assist in controlling non-member use of pool and appropriate SSST use of locker rooms and hot tub.
· Ensure prioritization of SVSTC member use of pool facilities during shared pool times with swim team according to the SVSTC Board’s policies.
5. Communication:
· Provide information to keep SVSTC and SSST websites updated.
· Communicate effectively with participants of all swim programs.
· Notify GM with regard to SSST events and other swim program changes that may affect the greater SVSTC membership.
6. SSST Swim Meets:
· Prepares statistics and information necessary to seed and schedule swim meets according to Marin Swim League (MSL) policy.
· Plan and attend all SSST meets, which are held on weekends, including All Stars and MSL Championships.
· Arrive approximately one hour prior to all SSST swim meets to conduct warm-ups and make any necessary line-up changes.
· Participate in all extra-curricular SSST activities, such as team picnics, awards banquets, off site day trips, and other team events.
Management Structure
The Head Coach reports directly to the Scott Valley Swimming and Tennis Club General Manager.
Compensation:
This is a year-round salaried position. Salary is commensurate with experience. There is the possibility of additional compensation for certain swim programs. In addition, the HC has the ability to teach private lessons and/or develop new aquatic programs at SVSTC that meet the Board’s policies with respect to pool usage. The HC will be paid a percentage of HC-taught-private lesson income. The position includes paid vacation and sick days, full medical and dental benefits and access to the SVSTC facilities for his or her immediate family.
