2016/17 Annual Awards
PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF AWARDS:
To recognize excellence and outstanding contributions to the UBC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, inclusive of all sites, during the 2016-17 academic year in the following areas:
1. Education
To recognize and encourage outstanding contributions to education in any one or more the following sub-categories:
· Undergraduate education (e.g. BMLSc students / Medical students)
· Graduate and Post-Doctoral education (Formal/classroom teaching; Mentoring/thesis supervision)
· Resident and Fellow education (Formal/classroom teaching; Informal)
· Continuing professional development-knowledge translation

2. Research and Discovery
To recognize excellence in research in any one or more of the following categories: Discovery, Mechanistic, Translational, Clinical, and Population. There are two awards in this category, for
A) researchers who are within 7 years of their faculty appointment; and B) all others.

3. Clinical Service
This award recognizes distinction in enhancing patient care through laboratory services (clinical innovation, quality assurance, and community outreach etc.).

4. Most Valuable Player (MVP)
Much like the sports MVP, this award recognizes the person who contributed the most in the past year by enhancing the visibility, functioning and overall success of our team (the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine), including administrative and community service.

5. David Hardwick Lifetime Achievement Award (Golden Bow Tie Award)
This award recognizes extraordinary members of the Department who have had sustained distinguished careers in the Department in the areas of research, teaching and service.
ELIGIBILITY for above awards: Clinical and academic faculty members of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Candidates will be selected from top-ranked individuals identified through the annual Departmental Merit review as well as by nomination.

6. Staff Service Award
There are two awards in this category, for A) administrative service and B) technical service. They celebrate and recognize the contributions of committed A) administrative staff and B) technicians and technologists whose outstanding performance enhances the mission of the Department to “maintain national leadership and international prominence within the discipline of pathology and laboratory Medicine” and helps create a more positive environment for colleagues and trainees.
ELIGIBILITY for the Staff Service Award: Employees of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine or other staff who are pivotal to the success of faculty members within our department, located at all sites.
7. Mentoring
This award recognizes distinction in mentoring (by faculty, residents, fellows, post-doctoral fellows, research associates, or graduate students) that has positively impacted faculty, staff, or trainees.

NOMINATION PROCEDURE
Any Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine member may nominate candidates for these awards. Nominators are required to complete the Awards and Recognition Nomination Form below. The recipients will be announced on May 19, 2017 at the Pathology Day Awards Reception.
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Awards and Recognition Committee will administer, receive, evaluate and recommend the awardees each year.
