WCHS Swimming and Diving 2014 – 2015

Tryouts:
- The following forms must be completed and returned to Mr. Tappis (room 136) by November 14th. All forms can be found at the following website:
- Pre-participation Physical Evaluation Form
- Medical Card for Athletes
- Student-Parent Participation Contract and Parent Permission Form
- Consent Form ImPACT Baseline Concussion Testing
- MSDE Concussion Awareness and Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Parent/Student-Athlete Acknowledgement Statement
- MSDE Pre-participation Head Injury/Concussion Reporting Form for Extracurricular Activities
- No one is able to participate in any practice until these forms have been turned in.
- Tryouts will be held on Monday, November 17th from 2:45-3:45pm and Wednesday November 19thfrom 5:30-6:30am at the Kennedy Shriver Aquatic Center (KSAC) – formerly known as the Montgomery Aquatic Center (MAC). The address for KSAC is:

- Swimmers and divers are responsible for their own transportation to and from KSAC.
- The final team roster will be posted outside room 136 on Thursday, November 20th and there will be a team dinner on Friday evening, November 21st for all team members. Girls may stay for a sleepover after the dinner ends.
Practice Attendance:
- Practices will be held on Mondays from 2:45-3:45pm and Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30am at KSAC.
- Swimmers and Divers who compete in a year round private programand attend 4 practices or more a week MUST actively participate in boththe scheduled practices per Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association rules.
- Swimmers and Divers who do not compete in a year round program MUST swim and/or dive during both of the scheduled practices.
- Swimmers and Divers who do not meet these requirements will be prohibited from participating in meets.
- Swimmers and Divers who need to miss a practice MUST contact me prior to the absence via e-mail with a valid excuse. If you habitually miss practice or are late, you will be asked to leave the team.
- Team members are required to pay their MCPS activity fee prior to the second practice.
Meets:
- All Swimmers and Divers MUST check in with Mr. Tappisat the meet location 30 minutes prior to the start of the meet.
- All meets MUST have parent volunteers which are provided by both teams. Please encourage your parents to volunteer so that meets run smoothly and on time.
- All Swimmers are expected to be an active participant in 5 of the 6 dual meets in order to be eligible for postseason competition.
- If you know that you cannot attend a meet, you must inform me in writing or via email at least seven days in advance. The line up for each meet will be emailed by Thursday or Fridayfor Saturday’s competition.
- If you have an emergency after the line up has been posted and cannot swim or dive, email me immediately AND call one of the captains and leave a message. Captain phone numbers will be released at a later date.
- All practice and meet “No Shows” (whether you are competing or not) will be prohibited from participation in the following week’s meet. Athletes who are practice and meet “No Shows” twotimes during the season will be asked to leave the team.
- Cancellations of practices or meets due to inclement weather will follow the MCPS guidelines for all athletic teams. Refer to the MCPS homepage and I will email the team as soon as I find out information as well.
- A competitor must remove all jewelry (except religious/medical which must be taped to the body). Objectionable attire or non-permanent body markings must also be removed before competing. Objectionable permanent body markings must be covered. Failure to adhere to these guidelines will result in disqualification from the meet.
- As of 2009, a swimmer may only wear one suit. Boys’ suits may not go above the naval or below the knees. Girls’ suits can go from the neck to the knee. The team will compete in team suits in dual meets.
Lettering:
- The fastest swimmersand the best divers will compete each week with the understanding that lineups fluctuate from meet to meet.
- To be eligible to earn a varsity letter, swimmers and divers will be required to be an active participant in 4 OF 6 dual meets.
- It is strongly suggested that swimmers and divers attend all other team functions (socials, team activities, team dinners, etc.)
Sportsmanship and Behavior:
- Respect for all… yourself, your team, your teammates, your school, your coaches, your parents, other teams and competitors, the pools, and the sport… everything!
- Behavior – Be the example: always welcoming, inclusive, and positive.
- Sportsmanship – Be spirited, cheer, set goals, participate, be involved, and most of all HAVE FUN!
