More than 280 UK companies will descend on Germany this week to take part in MEDICA, the world’s largest international healthcare fair to be held in Dusseldorf,

14 – 17 November 2007.

MEDICA is the leading global exhibition for the medical sector and attracts more than 130,000 visitors from across the globe. This year the Association of British Healthcare Industries (ABHI), supported by UK Trade & Investment is taking a pavilion of more than 90 innovative medical companies who are at the forefront of product technology development and services worldwide.

Minister of State for Trade and Investment Digby, Lord Jones of Birmingham said UK companies would use the event to showcase the strengths and achievements of the UK medical technology sector.

“It is well known that the UK punches well above its weight in the medical sector. With a £120 billion healthcare market, the UK is home to many of the world’s leading clinicians, scientists and researchers. We are a leader in developing cutting-edge healthcare products for the world market and in 2006 we exported more than £14 billion worth of healthcare goods and services.

“Every year at MEDICA small innovative companies can join forces with the major players to present a showcase on a scale unrivalled worldwide.”

Minister of State for Public Health Dawn Primarolo said:

“The UK healthcare industry makes an important contribution both in the export market and in developing new technology. This, combined with the government’s achievements in modernising the NHS, acts as a beacon for the international community and emphasises the quality of British products and devices overseas.”

John Wilkinson, Director General of the ABHI said:

"UK medical technology companies are highly respected within the global medical community as world leaders in innovation and quality.

“For many small and medium-sized UK companies this exhibition is an integral part of their export strategy providing an essential gateway to new markets. ABHI is proud to be taking a leading role in organising the participation of many of these groundbreaking UK companies."

In association with ABHI, UK Trade & Investment has organised a directory of UK exhibitors at MEDICA, detailing every company and their products and services. This can be found online at:

Malem Medical will be exhibiting their range of Enuresis Alarms to combat bedwetting. Malem Medical manufacturethe world’s best andlargest range of body worn and bedside Enuresis Alarms for the treatment and permanent cure of Bedwetting as well as a programmable Vibrating Watch and Bladder Stimulator. Malem have met and appointed most of their world wide distributors at Medica.

Bedwetting alarms alert the brain to the fact that the body is doing an act which is unacceptable. Making the conscious brain aware of the sensation of passing urine in bed during sleep will speed up the development and establishment of the natural control of the brain over the bladder so that child will sleep throughout the night without wetting or needing to empty the bladder.

Enuresis Alarms achieve permanent dryness by compressing the burden of unknown number of years of wetting into a maximum of three months".

Inditherm

Stand No: 16G 18-2

Inditherm has rapidly grown their international distributor network, from nothing to coverage in over 30 countries, over the last three years.Attendance at Medica with ABHI has been absolutely fundamental to this process. As a small organisation it has been invaluable that ABHI organises much of the detail and provides facilities that would be difficult for us to arrange.

Inditherm Medical is showing revolutionary patient warming systems, using their patented flexible polymer technology, at Medica 2007.

Products for the operating room and recovery (PACU) offer higher performance and greater convenience than traditional patient warming systems, according to independent clinical trial data made available by Inditherm. The potential cost savings that can be realised by using Inditherm technology are very substantial. In addition, all patients can be warmed routinely for the same cost as running a light-bulb. Clinical research data has shown previously that this should lead to much improved clinical outcomes for the patient, with faster recovery times and shorter hospital stays.

The CosyTherm neonatal warming system was has already attracted enormous interest and rapid market uptake. Users have been particularly impressed by the ultra-fast warm-up time, typically less than 5 minutes, and the ease of use. The system is equally suited for the neonatal intensive care unit, delivery suite and post-natal wards. An important factor for these departments is the ease of use and cleaning.

New product launches

P3 Medical Limited

NEW DOUBLE LUMEN TRACHEAL TUBE
More than 500,000 surgical procedures requiring lung isolation are carried out each year. The new PAPWORTH BIVENT double lumen tracheal tube is designed to combine the benefits of the conventional double lumen tubes and bronchus blockers without the occasional drawbacks of either. The device also has potential benefits in clinical areas where rapid lung isolation is required. It will:

  • Make it easier and quicker to pass through the larynx and correctly position.
  • Allow the ET tube to sit on the carina in a stable position due to the bifurcated tip design.
  • Ensure the bronchus blocker can be rapidly passed through either lumen directly into the bronchus considerably reducing the time from intubation to lung isolation.
  • Stabilise the inflated blocker cuff in position by preventing herniation of the blocker cuff into the trachea or dislodgement of the blocker from the bronchial orifice.

Exmoor

Stand No: 16F 18-3

Experienced exhibitors Exmoor are using Medica to launch the innovative new product Epidrum.

It shows the anaesthetist that he/she is now in a position to introduce the catheter and feed in the anaesthetic, ensuring that the patient’s dura is not punctured causing the painful results of a cerebral spinal fluid leak.

Clinical investigations have proven that Epidrum provides a more instantaneous visual signal than the current ‘loss of resistance’ technique signalled by sense of touch.
