LESSON PLAN: DESCRIBING THE WEATHER
Objective:As a result of this lesson, students will be able to: 1) read a weather report; and 2) describe weather conditions by using adjectives.

Warm up / The teacher writes the word weather on the board.
Students are asked to discuss their favorite kind of weather; they are also asked to discuss their least favorite kind of weather. During the discussion, the teacher writes the adjectives students use on the board. /

Activity 1 / The teacher defines adjective for students and provides examples of the term for them.
The teacher prompts students to come up with adjectives to describe the weather, and writes their answers on the board.
Students are shown pictures (not the descriptive text) accompanying a few weather reports. They are asked to describe the pictures. After each description, students are shown the actual weather report that accompanied the picture so they can compare the picture and the text.
Students form pairs and are given a worksheet that shows pictures of various weather patterns on one side of the worksheet. The other side shows text from weather reports. Student pairs match the pictures with the proper text. /

Activity 2 / Students are shown the text of a weather report on the overhead projector. The teacher asks students to read the report and pick out the adjectives.
The teacher asks students to help him/her draw a picture based on the text.
Students are shown the text from three weather reports. They are asked to read the reports and pick out the adjectives. Students are to draw representations of the weather described in the reports.
The teacher calls on individual students to share examples of their drawings with the class. /

Activity 3 / Students form pairs and are handed two sheets of paper. One sheet contains text for a weekend (3-day) weather report. The other sheet contains three blank boxes.
Students are to read the weather reports, circle the adjectives they see, and then draw representations for each report.
Once they are done, students hand their drawings and weather reports to their partners. Student pairs check each other’s work to see if the drawings and the text match. /

Assessment / Formal Assessment: The teacher checks answers from the matching worksheet for Activity 2. The teacher also walks around and monitors Activity 3. Students will turn in their drawings and weather reports to the teacher from Activity 3, allowing the teacher to further assess whether the lesson’s objectives have been met.
Informal Assessment: Students are asked if they understood the lesson. If they understood they are to give a thumbs up, if they sort of understood they are to give a sideways thumb, and if they still have questions they are to give a thumbs down. /
