Programme Description

This competency-based course prepares trainees in the core skills for entry-level positions in the Jamaica’s Building Construction Industry. Integrated throughout the course are career preparation standards, which include communication, interpersonal skills, calculation and computation, data operation, problem solving, and work place safety and employment literacy.

In order to be certified in this area, trainees should successfully complete a minimum of thirty six (36) Units. These comprise 31 core units which must be achieved by the trainee plus a minimum of one (1) level 1, three (3) levels 2 and one (1) level 3 electives.

READING ASSIGNMENT/QUIZZES/TESTS & PRACTICAL

1.  There are a number of reference texts and support materials used for this class. Each trainee is expected to read the assigned reading in full, before the class, as stated on the outline.

2.  Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. Quizzes cover the assigned reading material.

3.  There will be periodic tests over sections of material covered in class lectures, reading and assignments.

4.  There are a number of practical that will be completed during the period of this course.

Cheating, dishonesty and plagiarism

Any form of cheating is sufficient for an automatic zero. The facilitator is willing and available to help any trainee who seeks assistance. Cheating, dishonesty, plagiarism, copying portions of another trainee’s assignment etc. are totally unaccepted. Assignments are given to aid in the development of competency and acquisition of knowledge. Spend extra time to do your assignments with as little help from others as possible.

Course Objective (From Programme Outline)

Special Notes

  • Classes begin at 8:30am and ends at 4:00pm and each day all trainees MUST be punctual at all times.
  • Trainees will receive up to five (5) hours of classroom instructions, 1 hour of research time, ½ hour of employability skills and ½ hour for housekeeping each day of the week.
  • Trainees’ involvement in discussions during each session is an important aspect of the course. All trainees should expect to fully participate in class discussions and activities during all classes.
  • All pieces of assignment given in groups are mandatory for all trainees; each group will be formulated by the instruction.
  • Assignments should be handed in on the specified due date. Failing to comply with the specified date will result in a five percent (5%) reduction in marks for each outstanding day. Assignments that are more than five (5) days late will receive zero (0).
  • At the end of each unit or cluster trainees will complete a written, oral and/or practical internal assessment to demonstrate competence. In order to be assessed externally in completed units, trainees must achieve a minimum rating of three (3) in the internal assessments.
  • Trainees will be assessed externally after every four or five units completed by an external assessor.
  • Trainees should not be absent for more than 5% of the duration of the course.
  • Failing to comply may result in exemption from the external assessment.
  • Trainees will receive 5 days of classroom instructions. This includes hours for skill, guidance, entrepreneurial skills, language and communication, library skills and calculation. Trainees are also given one hour each week for extra-curricular activities.
  • All trainees are expected to compile a portfolio containing all assignments, quizzes and practical exercises. This portfolio will be checked at the end of the course.
