SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Director of Finance is responsible to provide oversight and leadership in finance, risk management, and administration. Responsible for the financial affairs of Open Door Mission including preparation of financial analyses and reports, including interim and final financial statements with supporting schedules. All members of Open Door Mission Executive Leadership team (E-Team) shall act as ambassadors for Christ and the Open Door Mission, active in the community and cognizant of collaborative beneficial relationships within the community.
Provide direction and leadership within the Finance department to establish and achieve outcomes and goals in accordance with Open Door Mission goals and objectives. Responsible for departmental staff, financial reporting, policies and procedures and acts as the liaison to the Board of Directors’ Finance Committee.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
As a member of Executive Team, uphold, promote, and encourage, in word and deed, desired organizational culture and purpose; intentionally seek to establish and maintain a culture that affirms and advances Grace and Truth in alignment with ODM Mission Statement.
Ensure timely and accurate reporting according to Open Door Mission’s needs and expectations; keep Executive Director informed and demonstrate commitment to open communication in an effort to fully participate in organizational stewardship, problem-solving, decision making, and strategic planning.
Provide leadership in the Finance/Administration functions of Open Door Mission:
- Business Office
- Human Resources
- Insurance
- Information technology
Conduct financial planning and forecasting.
Initiates and facilitates formation of the Annual Operating Budget in conjunction with the Executive Director and other staff.
Presents Annual Projections on Revenue and Expenses to the Executive Director.
Prepare and Manage organizational cash flow and monthly forecasts.
Evaluate previous fiscal year’s budget and follow-up with appropriate personnel to facilitate budget accountability and compliance.
Provides information on Mission finances to the Executive Director and others as directed by the ED. Information to be provided includes but is not limited to: budget compliance to date, indicating income and expense; prepare, provide and present financial information, as requested by the ED, at board meetings.
Ensure the timely execution of monthly and year end closing processes and Annual Audit.
Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors and the finance committee of the board of directors; assess any changes necessary.
Analyze, present and clearly communicate financial reports in an accurate and timely manner to Executive Director.
Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices in accordance with GAAP and other industry standards. Improve the Finance/Accounting department’s overall policy and procedure manual.
Primary responsibility for hiring, training, equipping, disciplining, and the evaluation of assigned staff.
Confer with direct reports to outline work plan and to assign duties, responsibilities, and scope of authority.
Represent the organization to financial partners including financial institutions, foundation executives, auditors, and public officials, etc.
Point of contact and primary relationship responsibility for associated vendors and consultants.
Authorize budgeted purchase orders and insure budget compliance within assigned departments; ensure timely input into the system.
Assist Executive Director in the review, initiation, execution, and monitoring of contracts as required or requested.
Approve and coordinate changes and improvements in automated financial, management and client information systems.
Ensure compliance with local, state and federal reporting requirements.
Establish and maintain appropriate internal control safeguards.
Establish and monitor investment strategies and policies in accordance with objectives set by the Finance Committee.
Interact with Executive Director and members of staff to provide consultative support for planning initiatives through financial and management information analysis, reports and recommendations.
Assist in obtaining the necessary licenses and insurance required to operate the Mission; handle all aspects of organizational risk management.
Remain up to date on nonprofit best practices including state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.
Carry out additional duties as requested by the Executive Director.
Co-Administer benefits program with HR Manager/EA:
- Evaluate and compare existing ministry benefits with other plans. Plans, develops, and/or participates in area and industry surveys. Analyzes results of information and develops specific recommendations for review by leadership.
- Facilitate meeting with vendors, obtain bids upon renewal, and confer with Director of Finance regarding benefit costs, implement according to decision of E-Team, conduct open enrollment and benefit meetings, process applications.
- Facilitate employee meetings and arrange for enrollment of employees in optional plans. Conduct employee benefit seminars for personnel. Handle benefit inquiries and concerns to ensure quick, equitable, courteous resolution.
- Maintain contact in person, and by phone or email, with broker, medical entities, insurance companies, employees, and beneficiaries to facilitate proper and complete utilization of benefits for all employees. Instruct insurance carriers, trustees, and other administrative agencies outside the ministry to effect changes in benefit program. Facilitate and ensure prompt and accurate compliance.
- Resolve claims, report changes in employee information, and communicate benefit information/changes to employees.

Strong knowledge of non-profit accounting principles, specifically fund accounting.
Valid New York state driver’s license

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree or greater in Business, Finance, or Management (Master’s highly preferred)
7 - 10 years’ experience working in finance and business with increasing responsibility; previous experience with a Rescue Mission, non-profit and/or urban ministry setting strongly desired.
CPA highly desired
5+ years of management/supervisory experience; previous executive leadership within rescue mission environment preferred
Equivalent combination of experience and education accepted
