Re:Commission

Date:June 3, 2012

St. Matthew’s Music Guild intends to commission you to compose a piece of approximately 8 - 10 minutes for chamber orchestra. The string orchestra should require no more than 6.4.4.3.2. You may use up to - but are not obligated to use - any of the following: 1 flute, 1 oboe, 1 clarinet,1 bassoon, 2 horns, 1 percussionist plus 1 timpanist, harp, piano. Any additional instruments must be agreed up on in writing between us.

The intent of the commission is for a piece that explores the intersection of Western and Latin American musical influences. Something along the lines of a tango would be superb.

The work will be performed by members of The Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthew's on Friday, JUNE 7, 2013, at St. Matthew's Church in Pacific Palisades, CA. The fee for this piece is $5,000. $2,500 will be paid to you on receipt of a signed copy of this letter. The balance will be paid by APRIL 15, 2013, provided you have by that time provided Tom Neenan with a complete score and set of parts.

St. Matthew’s Music Guild encourages the composition of new works that are accessible, inspiring, and uplifting. We are excited to perform music of immediate beauty and lasting value. We hope to create an environment that will entice listeners who may have been alienated by some trends in new music and we hope always to leave our listeners looking forward to their next encounter with new music rather than dreading it. Therefore we are especially asking for a work from you which will, within your own personal aesthetics, suit these purposes and which will make sense to the average music lover on a concert which also features standard repertoire.

In addition, we ask that you agree to the following:

1. that the manuscript and published copies of the score be inscribed as follows: “Commissioned by St. Matthew’s Music”;

2. that St. Matthew’s Music Guild retain the performance rights to the premiere of the piece for one year from its completion; these rights consist only of the right to present the premiere (consisting of all scheduled premiere performances) of the piece, for which St. Matthew’s Music Guild will pay appropriate licensing fees; St. Matthew’s Music Guild will retain no other performance rights;

3. that when you have made your final revisions, you provide us with a corrected score for our archives;

4. that the parts be prepared and presented in a professional manner using Finale, Sibelius or a comparable music engraving software;

5. that the parts and score be ready for a rehearsal no later than APRIL 15, 2013, in order to insure the best possible performance as well as the willing cooperation of the performers;

6. that you consult with Music Director Tom Neenan regarding any possible changes to the conditions above, including make-up of the instrumental; Mr. Neenan and the Music Guild will have sole discretion as to the hiring of a instrumentalists, singers or any other musicians who are to participate in the performance.

I look forward to the performance of your piece.

Sincerely,

Thomas Neenan, Music Director
