Submitted by Hanrong Wang, Law/Technology Librarian

July, 2010

The Family and Consumer Sciences Collection is housed in the Houston Cole Library, located in the center of campus. The building is a twelve-story structure divided into eight subject area “micro-libraries”. Each of the eight subject floors has a reference, periodical, microfilm, and circulating collection arranged where feasible by the Library of Congress classification. Each floor is managed by a subject specialist librarian who is responsible for collection maintenance and development, reference, instruction, and liaison communications for the disciplines on their floors. Family and Consumer Sciences-related library instruction is available by arrangement with the Head of Public Services or the subject specialist. Interlibrary Loan Service is available to faculty members, staff, graduate students and undergraduate students engaged in thesis or senior paper research. The Library provides free wireless access to university affiliated library patrons; six laptops are also available for in-library circulating.

There are ample study carrels and comfortable sitting areas on each floor. A student computer lab and a classroom are located on the 10th floor. Public workstations with Internet access are located throughout the building. The catalog is web-based and is accessible remotely. New materials are tracked from the time of order through processing and patrons may request them at any point during the acquisitions and processing activities. Research Assistance, Course Reserves, and Databases/Electronic Resources are also accessible through the Library’s homepage

The Library hours are:

Monday-Thursday 7:30 am - 11:00 pm

Friday 7:30 am – 4: 30 pm

Saturday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Summary

Total holdings, conspectus evaluations, and checklist comparisons indicate that the Family & Consumer Sciencescollection is adequate to support courses for the Bachelor of Science in Education teaching Field: Family and Consumer Sciences Education, in Family and Consumer Sciences: Child Development Concentrationin Science, Dietetics Concentration, Human Sciences Concentration, Merchandising Concentration, and Hospitality and Culinary Management Concentration.

Strengths:

The Family & Consumer Sciences collection has developed steadly since the last assessment in 2007. The average added percentage since 2005/2006to 2008/2009per theBlackwell’s All Publishers Approval Planis 25%,which has maintained/ exceeded the collection at a 3bP level.

The subject specialist has been working closely with the faculty liaison and departmental members for book, serial, and audio-visual material selection for instructional support. In addition, collection in subject areas has been developed to support the newly added courses from the Department. The strongest catergories and subclasses within the Family & Comsumer Sciences classification are:

Catergory/Subclasses / CallNumberRange / Number of Titles
Early Childhood, Preschool, Kindergarten & Promary / LB1139-1140 / 4,192
Decorative Arts; Applied Arts / NK / 2,011
Handicrafts, Arts & Crafts / TT / 2,237
Domestic Engineering / TX / 4,512

Child Development, Consumer Education, Fashion, Hospitality and Culinary Management, Dietetics and Merchandisingare being actively collected in electronic/print format. The results of the checklist comparisons indicate that the Library’s holdings are of good quality. The Library holds 62% of the titles listed in The Best Books for Academic Libraries 2004---Home Economics sectionand 81% of the titles listed in The Best Books for Academic Libraries 2004 Supplement---Home Economics section.

The Library holds or provides access to approximately 300 Family & Consumer Sciencesrelated periodicals/serials titles in print and electronic format. Furthermore, several databases were added to provide access to full text articles, citations and abstracts from thousands of periodicals. The periodicals/serials collection is more than adequate to support the curriculum with high quality materials. A comparison of the Library’s journal holdings against the journal checklists revealed a holdings rate of 41%. A list of available sample journals is included in the attachments.

Family & Consumer Sciences related Internet sites are easily accessible from the Library’s catalog. Web sites are scanned for scholarly content, particularly focusing on food, nutrition, merchandising, fashion, child development, and cooking sites.

Weaknesses:

Efforts have been made to collect materials on Vitamins, Protein, Cereals & Grains, but there are only a few monographs publish in this area. The AV holdings are also small and need to be developed further. Collection in the area of “Clothing (TX340)” also needs improving.

Recommendations:

The subject librarian should continue working closely with the faculty members for collection development. Academic journal titles available with full-text through databases, Internet sites, and other online electronic publication should continue to be added to the catalog for access.
