What is a Parent Screener?

A Parent Screener is an essential part of Thrive in 5’s School Readiness Pipeline and will play an important role in supporting other parents and their children in conducting the Learning Check-Ups - where a Parent Screener supports other parents in screening their children’s healthy development using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ). Upon receipt of the ASQ score, Parent Screeners will then conduct Follow-Up Meetings - where Parent Screeners review a child’s ASQ outcomes with the parents and help those parents find community referral resources for further assessment and services.

What do I need to become a Parent Screener?

Candidates should be committed to supporting parents in better understanding their child’s developmental progress. Candidates must be self-motivated, successful when working independently and in group settings, and have good communication skills.

Potential candidates also must be culturally competent and have the ability to work with parents and children of all ability levels. Parent Screeners will have an opportunity to enhance their own knowledge of early childhood development, receive leadership and professional development training in project management, and other key areas. Candidates must live in Boston.

Preferred qualifications:

Ability to work in a diverse and multi-cultural team environment

Bi-lingual in either Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese, Haitian-Creole, Vietnamese, or other language

Basic knowledge of healthy child development milestones

High school diploma or G.E.D.

Knowledge of community health and education resources

Experience working with parents whose children have special health care needs

Willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends

What is a Parent Screener responsible for?

Parent Screeners must commit to attending all trainings and successfully completing all work outlined below. This is a part-time position that offers much flexibility.

Required activities include, but are not limited to:

Attend mandatory Ages and Stages Questionnaire Training (approximately 3-4 hours reviewing ASQ and procedures, and 1-2 hours shadowing another Parent Screener)

Attend mandatory monthly Parent Screener Team Meetings

Communicate with the School Readiness Pipeline Coordinator regarding any concerns or challenges

Ensure confidentiality of parent and child information

Minimum of 2 ASQ screens per month after training is completed

Stipends:

Parent Screeners will receive

A stipend to attend all mandatory training

A stipend for each successfully completed Learning Check-Up and Follow-Up Meeting

A stipend to attend mandatory monthly Parent Screener Team meetings

Leadership and professional development training in project management, communication, and other important skills
