AVID Program Student Contract
Behavioral Expectations for Students:
- AVID students will be on time to all classes. They will be prepared to participate, having all materials necessary to put in their best effort. Excellent attendance is also expected.
- AVID students will complete all homework each night in all classes. They will put in the amount of time necessary to master the concepts, not just the time sufficient to complete the homework.
- AVID students will model excellent student behavior. They will be focused and engaged in classroom activities. No AVID student should ever get a student referral for excessive talking, off-task or inappropriate behavior. AVID students are expected to come to class ready to learn and participate.
- AVID students will adhere to the honor code. Any AVID student who plagiarizes will automatically go on AVID probation. If there are any further incidents of this nature, the student will be dismissed from the program and may receive a semester “WF” grade. In addition, any AVID student who is suspended will have the same consequences. If the suspension is an expellable offense, the student will automatically be dropped from the AVID program with a grade of “WF” (withdraw F and loss of 5 credits). They may not re-enroll in the program. Students who are suspended will be on AVID program probation for the duration of their time in AVID.
- AVID students are required to maintain a minimum 2.5 grade point average. If the student’s grade point average falls below the 2.5 GPA, they will go on AVID probation. The expectation would be that the student should consider summer school to improve their GPA. If the student does not improve his or her grade point average while on probation, the student may not participate in AVID. In addition, any grade below a “C-“ in AVID or any other course qualifies a student for probation as well
- If students change dates on homework assignments or on binder checks or on required class notes, they will be considered on AVID program probation. It is important that all students in AVID behave in an ethical and scholarly manner and adhere to program requirements about academic honesty.
- All AVID students must stay on a college preparatory (A-G) track. Any student who is not four-year college eligible is not eligible to participate in the program.
- AVID students are expected to be contributing members of society, as demonstrated through their involvement in community service. A community service requirement of 10 hours per semester is required. This can be fulfilled in part by volunteering with students at the Dublin Library or in other community service, either on the DublinHigh School campus or outside of school in the larger community. Students will keep a log of their involvement for their AVID teacher to review.
- AVID students are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities, which can include but are not limited to: sports, clubs, working, volunteerism, community activities, religious involvement, the arts, Scouts, mentoring or any positive activity which will enhance their personal interests and resume for college applications.
- AVID students will display a positive attitude and good interpersonal skills so that they are considered positive leaders on the DublinHigh School campus, as well as in the community at large and within the AVID program. AVID students are expected to display a positive, respectful demeanor in all classes, both towards each other and with their instructor. They will be especially mindful of behavioral/attitudinal expectations while at other school sites or on college visits or when visitors to AVID are present, which may include college or career speakers. While on field trips or when speakers are present, AVID expects students to ask meaningful and relevant questions so that they can get the most out of these opportunities.
- AVID students are encouraged to consider Honors or Advanced Placement courses throughout their tenure in high school. They are expected to attend the Honors/AP parent and student meeting in spring if they are considering placement in classes of this nature. In addition, all AVID students are expected throughout high school to maintain a rigorous, college-preparatory academic preparation for college. Non-college preparatory electives – with the exception of AVID – should generally not be considered.
- AVID students will come to tutorial prepared with an appropriate tutorial question and necessary prework already completed at home. AVID students understand that if all questions are answered, they will continue in tutorial with other pertinent questions designed to gain a deeper understanding of the material. They will bring their book for tutorial, so that if they need it as reference, they will have the necessary materials.
- AVID students may be assigned to a specific tutorial, based upon evidence of lesser achievement in a particular course of study. Teachers in AVID will either help a student select a tutorial, or will assign students according to their professional judgment.
- In tutorial, AVID students will take notes on the material being covered and will write a thoughtful reflection of what they gleaned from tutorial. They will receive points from tutors according to their participation and reflection.
- All AVID students are expected to maintain their planner for all academic subjects. They will also use the goal-setting and time management sections each day. Tutors will collect the planners on a weekly basis, in addition to a subject-specific notebook. Students are expected to take a minimum of four Cornell-style pages of notes per week for each academic subject, unless an alternate method of note taking is cleared with their AVID teacher. Students who change dates on required notes will be placed on program probation.
- All AVID students in their senior year are expected to apply for a MINIMUM of three scholarships. In addition, students in the Junior Seminar class will be expected to complete a college research project so that they are prepared prior to senior year to apply to reasonable college choices. Freshmen and sophomore students will do college research projects as well as specified by their instructor. In the junior and senior seminar classes, students will be expected to study the concept of leadership as a positive catalyst for change in our society and to complete all required work, including research and papers associated with this study. All work in AVID, including writing assignments, research papers and college projects is to be thoughtfully and completely executed so that it is a meaningful learning experience.
- AVID students are expected to take the PSAT in their first three years of high school and the PLAN as sophomores. They are also to follow the guidelines for registration and preparation for the SAT Reasoning Test and ACT testing as outlined by their counselor and AVID teacher. In addition, it is the expectation of the program that with other standardized testing, including the California High School Exit Exam, STAR testing or California Standards testing that AVID students will perform to the best of their ability, so that AVID teachers can help students target areas for improvement and so that test scores are a meaningful representation of the student’s strengths and areas for improvement.
- AVID students are encouraged to use the support system in AVID to approach either their counselor or AVID teacher with any concerns or positive items to share. The AVID staff is committed to supporting AVID students both personally and educationally.
- AVID discipline policy:
- 1st infraction: AVID teacher conferences with AVID student
- 2nd infraction: AVID teacher calls AVID parent
- 3rd infraction: AVID student conferences with Coordinator, Teacher and Counselor, parent to be contacted by Coordinator and Teacher following conference
