Principal Investigator Status Request
It is the University’s policy that only those whom the University has or intends to have an on-going employment or contractual relationship may serve as Principal Investigators or Program Directors for projects, research or otherwise, supported by external funding sources.
The status of principal investigator is granted as a matter of privilege to all faculty in the Medical Center and toselect senior administrative staff. This status is available to faculty on tenure tracks I through III and to other regularrank faculty on the Research Professor, Clinical Professor, and Professor of the Practice of tracks. Faculty who areappointed to the regular rank tracks IV and V may serve as principal investigators with the approval andendorsement of their departmental chairpersons, who assure the assumption of responsibility for the conduct of thegrant should the principal investigator, not remain with the University for the duration of the project. In specialinstances, other members of the Medical Center community may request permission to serve as principal investigator with the approval and endorsement of their departmental chairperson.
Individuals that hold Principal Investigator (PI) status are eligible to submit proposals for research, training, or public service contracts or grants to extramural agencies, subject to approval of the appropriate department chair and dean (or delegate). Individuals who submit applications through the Office of Research Administration must hold PI Status.
Individuals who are not eligible for PI status by virtue of their appointments must be approved for PI status when submitting contract and grant proposals.
To request PI Status, complete this form, obtain Department/Division Chair signatureand submit to your ORA assigned Research Administrator by Administrative Actions Request on the ORA Website.
