Pastor’s Epistle
We know that all things work together for good for those who love God,
who are called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28
There is a children’s book that has been around since I was a child, and that my own children have in their bookshelves, called Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. The story is about a little boy named Alexander who just can’t seem to catch a break on a particularly dreadful day.
A few years ago in a church far, far away, (in Arizona actually) I remember an experience that made me feel an awfully lot like Alexander. I didn’t sleep well the night before Sunday worship, the next morning I discovered that a button was missing from my favorite clergy shirt, and I had to change a flat tire on our minivan before I was even able to get to church! Then, when I finally arrived at church, I soon discovered that something had gone terribly wrong with the electrical system in the sanctuary which left us with barely any lights, poorly working microphones, only half of our air conditioners, and absolutely no multimedia capabilities. I was truly having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day! We somehow stumbled our way through worship without our normal electrical components, and afterwards I began to receive damage reports of just how many things weren’t working. I kept thinking to myself, “Dear Lord, I hope our insurance pays for all of this!”
As it turns out, just a day later we learned that the problem was caused due to a short in the underground electrical wiring coming into the facility. The electric company came and repaired the problem, power was fully restored to the sanctuary building, and as it turned out most of all the potentially ‘damaged’ electrical components were found to be in good working order. My mantra for the week was; “Thank you Lord!”
As I worried and started to uneasily dwell on all the work and aggravation it was going to take to repair what we originally thought had been damaged, it has been helpful for me to hear once again how “No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it.” [1 Corinthians 10:13]
During times of difficulty, God always provides a way for us to see and get to the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. When we have bad days, and very bad days, or down right terrible, horrible, no good, very bad days, Jesus Christ sympathizes with us, for he struggled with the very same trials and tribulations that we do. [Hebrews 4:15] Remember that God is never far off and away from us but rather, it is he who is with us every step of the way, graciously reminding us that everything is going to be alright, eventually, and gives us the faith to believe such good news when all evidence sometimes seems to point to the contrary. Praise be to God for the truth of our faith which teaches that we are to “boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” [Romans 5:3-5]
Blessings,
Pastor Justin

2016 SUMMER MUSIC DEDICATIONS
This summer you have an opportunity to support the ongoing musical ministry of Memorial Presbyterian Church!
A donation of $100 will be used to provide for our very talented organist Shellie, whose position is currently seasonal, to continue to play during the summer months. Your donation will be made in memory or honor of someone of your choosing. You may also choose several hymns to be sung which will be chosen at a later date! We will share for whom the music is being dedicated in memory or honor of in the worship bulletin as well as our monthly newsletter.
Please choose three Sundays that you would enjoy providing your support and number them in order of preference 1, 2, & 3. We will do our best to use your first choice of Sundays, but may need to use one of the other two choices depending on what others have requested.
