I. COURSE DESCRIPTION: (as stated in the bulletin, including necessary pre-requisite courses, credit hours)
VNSG 1429 – Medical-Surgical Nursing I. Four hours credit. Application of the nursing process to the care of adult patients experiencing medical-surgical conditions in the health-illness continuum. A variety of healthcare settings are utilized. Sixty-four classroom hours. Prerequisites: VNSG 1226, 1304, 1423, 1361, and 1405. Co-requisites: VNSG 1133, 1136, 1306, 1331, and 1362.
INTENDED AUDIENCE:
Freshman working toward educational requirements for a Vocational Nursing Certificate.

After completing this course, the student should be able to describe how disease affects the medical-
surgical adult client.
* Identify problems related to the human responses to diseases.
* Utilize the nursing process to describe nursing care for the medical-surgical adult client.
* Explain how disease processes affect the geriatric patient.
* Identify the teaching methods that the nurse can utilize for identified knowledge
deficits surrounding diseases of the medical-surgical adult client.
* Discuss the medical, pharmacological, and nutritional management of various diseases.
* Explain the legal and ethical considerations of nursing the adult medical-surgical client.
* Develop critical thinking skills as applied to the adult medical-surgical client with various diseases.
* Define and describe maladaptive behavior disorders and related treatment.

Suggested activities assigned per instructor include getting acquainted with textbook, reading each
chapter as assigned per the Black Board calendar, reviewing the vocabulary for each chapter, and completing the review questions at the end of each chapter.

Exams for this course will be administered through Black board or scantron tests. Written assignments will be graded according to the criteria for written assignments. Oral presentations will be graded according to the oral presentation criteria.

· Safety Data Sheet (SDS) Book
A Safety Data Sheet is a document that contains information on the chemical make-up, use, storage, handling, emergency procedures and potential health effects related to a hazardous material. The SDS contains much more information about the material than the label on the container. SDS’s are prepared and written by the manufacturer of the material.
The SDS sheets are accessible at all times & are kept in the following location(s):
