Purpose
This qualification builds on the skills and knowledge recognised by the National Certificate in Hauora (Māori Health) (Level 4) [Ref: 0710] and is intended for people who choose to enhance their knowledge and skills in Hauora. It recognises advanced knowledge and skills related to Maori health initiatives such as manaakitanga, auahi kore, korikori tinana, tamariki ora, counselling, youth work, whānau work, drug and alcohol work, primary and secondary health services, social services and other community support services. People awarded with this diploma will have gained knowledge in te reo Māori, Hauora, tikanga and research.
Tikanga is interwoven through all practices of Hauora pertinent to the rohe and includes interaction with whānau, hapū, iwi and study of Māori models of health, Māori history and Māori best practice models. Holders of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge required to assist people by providing them with Hauora services delivered by health providers, Māori health providers, mainstream health services, institutions, marae, community centres and local clinics. The core compulsory unit standards extend the candidate’s competency in te reo Māori and can assist the candidate with te reo Māori when interacting with specific client groups.

This qualification has been replaced by the National Diploma in Hauora (Māori Health) (Level 6) [Ref: 1657].
Special Notes
Prerequisite: National Certificate in Hauora (Māori Health) (Level 4) [Ref: 0710], or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.
In the subfield of Reo Māori, candidates must have achieved credit for all the level 3 unit standards, or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills, in order to achieve credit for any of the level 4 unit standards.
Candidates who are awarded both the National Certificate in Hauora (Māori Health) (Level4) [Ref: 0710] and the National Diploma in Hauora (Māori Health) (Level 5) [Ref:0711] will also have met the requirements for the National Certificate inReo Māori (Level4) [Ref: 0426] and may make separate application for that certificate.

Changes to structure and content
- The title of the qualification has changed to refer to Māori Health, rather than Māori Community Health, and the level has been added.
- The purpose statement has been updated to reflect industry requirements.
- Standards 9685,18562, and 18564 have been added to the compulsory section; standards 18413 and 18414 have replaced 15318,15319, 15320, and 15321; and the credit requirement has increased from 141 to 157.
- Electives 1 and 2 have been incorporated into one elective; the Humanities field has been added; and the credit requirement has decreased from 45 to 15.
- The total credits for the qualification have decreased from 186 to 172.
People currently enrolled in programmes leading to the award of version 1 may complete that version or transfer to version 2.
This qualification contains standards that replace earlier standards. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards – see table below.
