The Faith of George Mueller
One day an American preacher by the name of Dr. A. T. Pearson crossed the Atlantic and came specifically to Bristol, England because he wanted to meet George Mueller. He had heard of George Mueller and about his faith, and he wanted to know the man.
Mr. Mueller was a perfect host. He took him through the five buildings that they had built as orphanages and gave him the background story about how they were developed. At the end of the day he brought him to his home to give him some nourishment. He decided it was too late for him to go elsewhere, and asked him to retire in his house. He said to Dr. Pearson, that before they go to bed he would like to have a word of prayer with him, would Mr. Pearson mind? Dr. Pearson thought, “I came here for that purpose. I want to hear this man pray. When he talks to God, like Moses on Mount Sinai, there’s gotto be thunder and lightning, there’s gotto be earthquake.” He was surprised beyond belief. Mr. Mueller never raised his voice. In quiet conversational tones he spoke to God. At the end of his prayer he simply reminded God that there were over 2,000 orphans who had to have breakfast the next morning, and there was nothing in the kitchen to feed them. A. T. Pearson nearly fell off his chair!
The sequel to that story may be of interest to you. There was a baker that owned a large bakery in that city. At 2:00 a.m. that morning, he awoke, got out of bed, got dressed and went to see the manager of his plant. The baker woke him up and said, “I want you to bring enough food up to the orphanage to feed them for breakfast”. The man was a little bit annoyed, and said, “You woke me up only to tell me that? Are you sure that’s all you want to tell me?” He said, “No, take them enough food for a week.” Then he said, “When I think about it, bring them enough for a month, I’ve get to got some sleep!”
Every meal, every day, every month, every year, George Mueller had to pray for. For 63 years, they never once missed a meal…and the longest they ever had to wait was 30 minutes.
George Mueller had an unwavering, child-like dependence upon God’s response to his prayer of faith, to supply all things. He was an ordinary man who had come to learn to trust in an extraordinary God…What about you?
