CNCS Update:Fiscal Year 2017 Budget
CNCS is still on a continuing resolution until December 9, 2016. We anticipate either another continuing resolution or a budget to be passed before the expiration of the current CR. The transition team for the president-elect has not landed at CNCS yet and it is anticipated it may be several weeks or months before the team lands at the agency.
Mayor, Tribal and Counties Day 2017
The nation’s mayors and county executives are increasingly turning to national service as a cost-effective strategy to address local challenges. By unleashing the power of citizens, AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs have a positive and lasting impact – making our cities and counties better places to live. To spotlight the impact of national service and thank those who serve, mayors across the country will participate in the fifth-annual Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service on April 4, 2017. We’ll be counting on grantees, commissioners, and community partners to help us engage Mayors in this opportunity to recognize national service. Please submit your information online or to the state office to enter into the system.
State Office Updates
- Donald Lovejoy started in the State Office as the new Program Officer. He is a former VISTA and AC State member and has hit the ground running. The Nevada Volunteers VISTA grant will be assigned to Donald going forward.
- The State Office recently launched a Facebook page and hopes to use social media as a way to spread the word about great things happening in Nevada, opportunities for national service members and grantees, and to share items of importance from a national perspective. We hope to also be able to cross promote items with Nevada Volunteers.
- The State Office is working on setting up a GovDelivery account that will allow us to reach out to users that have opted in to the system from the CNCS website. The account allows us to drill down to different audiences so that we can send out targeted messages to grantees and other stakeholders. We hope that this will be a useful communication tool not only for internal purposes but to also share information from Nevada Volunteers and other appropriate organizations as one other mechanism for spreading the word about national service and volunteer activities in the state.

AmeriCorps VISTA:
The State Office launched a Request for Concept Papers in November 2016. We conducted outreach (with the help of NV Volunteers) and held a technical assistance call in November. Concept Papers are due on 12/2 and we are hoping to fund 5 cost-share and 12 standard positions.
Six new VISTA Supervisors attended an orientation in November in L.A. including staff from brand new programs and new staff at existing programs.
The State Office gave a presentation on opportunities to serve in AmeriCorps at the Nevada Student Leadership Transition Summit which targeted high school students with disabilities, teachers, and counselors from school districts and state public charter schools from throughout the state. This was a great opportunity to share this information with students and staff in school districts in Nevada and has resulted in several inquiries from both about how to apply for AmeriCorps.
