Piercing Aftercare

Piercer.

MOST piercings take about 6-8 weeks to heal before it is safe to change your jewelry. If you have any questions about whether or not your jewelry is ready to be changed, always consult your piercer first.

If you think you have an infection:Consult your piercer or see a physician for antibiotics. It isNEVERrecommended to take out your jewelry while an infection is present, as this will trap the infection inside your body. Signs of an infection areif you have green or yellow secretions and excessive redness or tenderness around your piercing.

How to Take Care of a Basic Piercing:

ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS EVERY TIME YOU CLEAN YOUR PIERCING!

Clean 2-3 times a day using a Q-tip and a fragrance free liquid antimicrobial soap. Be sure toRINSE THOROUGHLYto remove any residual soap.

Sea salt soak:Dissolve 4 teaspoons ofNon-Iodized Sea Saltinto one gallon of distilled water. MIX WELL and leave in refrigerator. When you clean your piercing, pour solution into Dixie cup, shot glass, etc. and heat in the microwave until it is warm, but not too hot for comfort (usually about 40-50 seconds).Soak the piercing for about 5-10 minutes.RINSE THOROUGHLY!Do this twice daily for the next 6-8 weeks. Be sure and re-make this mixture every TWO WEEKS.

If you would like, you can use a packaged sterile saline (sea salt) solution such as H2Ocean in place of the sea salt soak. In this case, just spray your piercing off 3-6 times a day with the solution.

Oral Piercings:

Rinse mouth out 4-5 times a day using an alcohol-free mouthwash such as Scope, Listerine, or Biotene. For any additional rinses (after food, smoking, etc) you may use a diluted mouth rinse mixture or just water.

STAY AWAY FROMbeer, milk, wine, and spicy or citric foods for the next week, to a week and a half. Beer for about 3-4 Weeks.

No wet kissing for 2 weeks, oral sex for at least a month.

Clean the outside of the piercing (if it applies to you) 2-3 times daily with either the anti-bacterial soap or the sea salt solution.

Dermal Aftercare:

Leave the Band-Aid(s) on for the first THREE DAYS without cleaning. If the Band-Aid comes off, replace it immediately with a fresh one. After three days, clean the piercing very thoroughly and replace the Band-AidONLY WHILE YOU SLEEPfor the next week. After that, it is no longer required to cover the piercing.

Use the sea salt soak method (stated above) to clean your piercingTWICE DAILY.

Clean very gently around the dermal head using an antimicrobial soap and Q-tip. Do not try to get under the dermal head using the Q-tip! This can cause unnecessary trauma and rejection. Any “crusties” will be loosened with the sea salt soak and removed naturally in the shower.

Specific Body Part Tips and Tricks:

Ear and facial piercings:“The T-shirt Trick” can help prevent infection by giving you a clean surface to sleep on. Take a Clean T-shirt and dress your pillow with it to sleep on that night. The second night, flip the pillow over for a new clean surface. The 3rdnight, turn the shirt inside out and restart the process. This will give you 4 nights of a clean surface out of just one shirt. Do this for at least the next 6-8 weeks.

Navel Piercings:Clean out the inside of your navel itself using a separate Q-tip before you clean your jewelry and the piercing with a fresh Q-tip. Also, be careful with buckling seat belts, getting up from tables, and dressing. A snag can not only be painful but can also cause rejection.

What to avoid:

Do not try to change jewelry early; This can cause excessive scarring, infection, and various other issues.

Do not clean your piercing with alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, bactine, Neosporin, or any other solutions or ointments not recommended by your piercer. These can either dry your piercing, cause infection, or delay healing times. If you have any questions about whether an aftercare method is safe to use, always consult your piercer first for any information about potential risks caused by that treatment.

Do not touch your jewelry at all during the healing process. Moving or rotating jewelry while cleaning is unnecessary and can cause minor trauma to your piercing. If you feel the need to move or rotate your jewelry, only do so when there are no crusties present and only water on your jewelry, no soap or salt.

Do not submerge your piercing in water for at least a month. (no baths, hot tubs, pools, etc)
