Purpose

This qualification is awarded to people who have demonstrated competence in the measurement of trees and logs. People gaining credit for the unit standards comprising this qualification are able to take measurements of forest trees and stands for the control of the quality of forest operations, sample forest stands for forest pre-harvest inventory purposes, or measure logs and calculate volumes in forest harvesting operations. The qualification has options to allow the development of skills in forest business management, to further enhance the graduate’s capability.

The qualification builds on skills from the National Certificate in Forestry (Establishment and Silviculture) (Level 3) [Ref: 0702], and may lead on to the National Certificate in Forestry (Operations Management) [Ref: 0834], the National Certificate in Forestry (Business Management) [Ref:0820], and the National Diploma in Forestry (Forest Management) (Level 6) [Ref: 0232].

Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.

Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). Version 3 was issued to indicate that this qualification is expiring.

Candidates currently working towardsversion 3 of the National Certificate in Forestry (Mensuration) [Ref:0833] can choose to complete that version or transfer their existing achievements to version 2 of the National Certificate in Forest Operations (Level 3) with strands in Establishment, Pruning, Thinning to Waste (Small Trees), Thinning to Waste (Large Trees), Tree Felling - Basic Techniques, Thinning for Extraction, Breaking Out for Ground Based Harvesting, Breaking Out for Cable Harvesting, Landing Operations, and Mensuration [Ref: 1411]. All new candidates will be enrolled into [Ref: 1411].
