Course Description: This course is a comprehensive study of World History, which includes the broad history of humankind, with a more concentrated focus from the Enlightenment Period to present day. Students are introduced to cultural, economic, political and social developments that played a fundamental role in shaping the world in which they live now. The students will be challenged in this course through a variety of activities and learning levels including application, synthesis, evaluation, and analysis. The students will study political, economic, geographic, religious, and cultural events that helped shape our world today. The material covered in this class will assist in preparing for the Ohio Graduation Test.

Textbook: World History: The Human Journey, Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 2003.

Work Description: Students are expected to contribute in class discussions and effectively participate in class activities. In order for class discussions to work, student preparation and participation is critical. Reading assignments in advance is essential for the student to see the big picture of history. History is not a series of snapshots, but a video that runs continuously. Please do not blink and miss the whole picture. I do have a website where I will post assignments, powerpoints, notes, class activities, podcasts, and other relevant material. Use this resource in your preparation this year.

Grading: Grades will be calculated using a point system. That is simply, each project, assignment, test or quiz will be given a certain point value. There will be rubrics, periodically distributed for major assignments and/or projects. I will be following the Strongsville High School Grading policy found in the Student Handbook. If you have an excused absence, you will be allowed to make up the work by the amount of days you were absent. Late work will ONLY be accepted after 2 days (with a reduced score) then it becomes a 0. If you have an unexcused absence, you automatically receive a 0 according to the SHS policies. It is ultimately YOUR RESPONSBILITY TO MAKE SURE YOU COMPLETE ANY WORK YOU MISS DUE TO ABSENCE(S).

LATE PROJECTS WILL RESULT IN A DROP OF ONE LETTER GRADE PER DAY!

Grades will be based on the following Strongsville High School Grading scale:

ü  100% ------89.5% = A

ü  89.4%------79.5% = B

ü  79.4%------69.5% = C

ü  69.4%------59.5% = D

ü  59.4% and below ------= F

The semester breakdown will be based on the following percentages:

1st Quarter = 40%, 2nd Quarter = 40%, Final Exam = 20% 1

Behavioral Expectations and Consequences: In my classroom, I expect you to respect others and take responsibility for your actions. There will be no lying, no bullying, no swearing, no teasing, no rude gestures, or put-downs of any kind. I expect you to follow all directions the first time they are given – whether or not you understand why I am asking you to do something, you will comply with directions. Cell phones are to be put away and turned off. If I catch anyone text-messaging in class, the phone becomes mine and is turned over to the Freshman Principal. There will be no eating and drinking in class!

Class will begin each day with some type of bellwork assignment. I expect you to be in your assigned seat when the bell rings with ALL necessary materials and working on the Bell Work assignment. Any time there is an announcement being made or a visitor at the door, you need to stop what you’re doing, wait quietly, and listen for instructions. At the end of class, I will dismiss you, not the bell. The bell is set to let teachers know when class time is over, not to dismiss the students.

The classroom should be a place where ideas are freely and respectfully expressed and students participate appropriately in classroom learning activities. My classroom expectations are fairly straightforward. I give you several opportunities to choose to do the correct thing with the “three stikes and you are out”policy. You get two warnings and then consequences will follow.

Ø  BE ON-TIME

Ø  BE PREPARED

Ø  BE RESPECTFUL

Ø  BE RESONSIBLE

Ø  DO WHAT’S RIGHT

When you are not doing what you should be doing, I will give you two warnings. If you continue the behavior, there will be consequences for your choices. Possible consequences include two warnings, parent contact, detention, referrals, excused from class with a 0.
