Introduction/Context / This lesson will instruct the student on how to inspect condition of refrigerant oil removed from A/C system, and determine necessary action. Knowledge of these techniques and the skills required to correct problems associated with this task are necessary for a student to acquire if they wish to compete for high paying, high skilled jobs in an Automotive Repair Facility. Entry level technicians need to be able to perform this task to 100% accuracy. Incorrectly performing this task can lead to an automobile accident or create customer satisfaction issues.

Content/Presentation/Demonstration Outline

Instruct students that because the lubricating oil circulates with the refrigerant in an A/C system, discharging refrigerant into a recovery station removes oil from the system as well. Let them know that recycling equipment separates the oil from the refrigerant.
Tell students that when recharging the system, be sure and add the same amount of fresh oil as was removed. The system also loses refrigeration oil during component replacement. Inform students that most shop manuals specify how much oil to add after replacing each part. Tell them to remember to add mineral oil to an R-12 system and the correct synthetic to an R-134a system, and not to confuse the two. Remind them to follow the recommendation of the compressor manufacturer when selecting refrigerant oil.
Instruct students that refrigerant oil is highly refined and dried to remove almost all water. The purity and dryness of the oil are crucial for proper system operation. When working with refrigerant oil, teach students to: * Keep oil containers sealed until use, as they attract moisture. Store PAG oil in metal, not plastic, containers. * Be sure and keep fittings and surrounding areas clean * Do not return used oil to the system. Be sure and replace oil with the correct amount of fresh, clean oil. * Always use the specified oil.
Inform students that there are Refrigerant Oil Testers available to test the condition of a vehicle’s Refrigerant Oil. These testers use strips to let the technician know if there is contamination present, and if the system is in need of oil. Explain that the following steps are an example of using the Refrigerant Oil Tester. * The technician starts the vehicle. * Once cold, the tech runs the A/C system for 1 minute. * The tech turns the vehicle off. * The technician presses the single use Oil Tester to the low pressure port 3 times, then checks the color of the strips.
Let the students know that the color of the strip will let the tech know it the A/C System should be flushed and replaced with new oil, if Refrigerant Oil replacement is advisable, or if the quality is OK..
Explain to students that the following steps help maintain the correct amount of oil in the system: * Tell them to measure the amount of oil lost during system discharge, and add that much fresh oil. * Drain and measure the oil from replaced components, and add that amount of fresh oil. * Be sure and add the recommended amount of oil that does not drain from the inside of replaced components.

Applications/Practice

1 / Refer to content

Evaluation and feedback Prior to Testing or Lab Work

1 / Objective 1. / Formative assessment / Instructor will observe students as they practice the procedure to assure correct procedure and safety practices are being followed. A checklist will be utilized to chart student progress on the task. Questioning techniques will be utilized as necessary to demonstrate student comprehension / Adaptations and/or accommodations for special needs students will be added if required.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT:(Assess student progress with performance criteria.)

1 / Objective 1 / Summative assessment / written test questions on stated objective / adaptation and / or accommodations for special needs students will be added if required
IMPACT--Reflection/Analysis of Teaching and Learning: (How did students’ progress in relation to the state objectives? Was the instruction successful? Analyze samples of student work particularly that which is unsatisfactory, for the purpose of planning further instruction.)
REFINEMENT--Lesson Extension and Follow-up: (To be filled in as the lesson is modified during initial planning and/or during the teaching learning process.)
