Labeling: Cultural Diversity
Day 2
Course: Adult Roles
Lesson: Respect
Materials: “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein
Magazines,
scissors,
glue,
poster paper
Discussion:
Who knows what the golden Rule is? (“Treat others the way you would like to be treated). When you follow the Golden Rule, you are being respectful and considerate of others and themselves. Have students name ways they show respect. Write their responses on the board.
Does anybody see anything wrong with this Golden Rule? Discuss the Golden Rule with a twist: “Treat others the way they would like to be treated”. How does that changed the respect towards someone else? This shows respect for the differences between people.
Have each student name something he/she likes. Then ask students if they had the same response. Explain that sometimes people tend to like different things, yet they should all be treated with the same respect.
Then ask students to name other differences they may have with one another. (For example, student may have different cultural backgrounds, abilities, and appearances.)
Acitivity: Now, have students work together to create a mural that honors the differences among people. Have each student cut pictures from catalogs, magazines, and store circulars that depict different people participating in a variety of activities. Then have the students glue their pictures to poster board. Mount the posters under the heading “We Respect Each Other’s Differences.”
Discuss: Are we all alike? In what ways can we show respect towards other people’s differences.
Story: Read the Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.
Activity: Have students share with the class what they brought that makes them an individual.
