DONAUWELLENREITER (Danubesurfer)

Massive waves made by a sound

Being the novel climber of the Austrian music scene – one of these scarce sound jewels that only might have been able to emerge from a cultural centre as radiant as Vienna: Donauwellenreiter play a fascinating distinct sound of highly poetic charisma. Masterly capacity adjacent to smartness, lightness adjacent to depth enable the quartet to move about freely between Pop-band, chamber orchestra and Jazz-combo.

Surf riding waves of self- penned palpitating songs and puissant elegies- without due care but at full tilt.

The tantalising compositions of pianist Thomas Castaneda kindle the moving playing of Lukas Lauermann on cello and Jörg Mikula on drums as well as the vibrantly fervent voice – and violin blazes of Maria Craffonara. Chamber and Minimal Music, Pop and Jazz constitute the great compact drifting of the sound.

Donauwellenreiter formed in 2010, are already regularly featured on international festivals and concert series s.a.Worldmusic Festival Hamilton (Can), Int. Jazzfestival Saalfelden (AUT) Int. Accordion Festival Vienna (AUT), Outreach Jazzfestival Schwaz (AUT), Worldmusic Festival Bolzano (IT), Jazz around the world, Munich (GER).

Among the former highlights rank the opening of the "Langen Nacht der Museen" at the Potsdam Square in Berlin ( 2011), as well as the premiere of the commissioned piece "High Fidelity" at the State Museum Ferdinandeum in Innsbruck ( 2011). The much-praised first album"Annäherung" (approximation), was released 2012, the second album „Messëi“was releasedin april 2014 (Inuition music, GER)

„Wow (..) if you want something you‘ll enjoy so much that’s gleefully out of the ordinary that it‘ll drive you nuts, this is what you want to be hearing. Well done“

Chris Spector, Midwest Record, USA

„Massive waves made by a sound. Journeys with Hubert von Goisern, Tango, Classic, Jazz, Pop:

Donauwellenreiter in corporate the impossible… The Danube does not pass through Mexico nor does it pass through South-Tirol… but that is irrelevant. For the talents of a genuine Donauwellenreiter also embrace the capacity to elegantly surf across geografical and musical distances.“
Salzburger Nachrichten, A, 2012

„Second- by- second fluctuations between Tango, Balkan and Minimal Music, Klezmer, Jazz and Latin, the contemplative, the disturbing, the danceable is collaged into a homogeneous whole.“
ORF, Radio Ö1 Diagonals Feiner Musiksalon, 2012

"Donauwellenreiter (...) appear as a three-person chamber orchestra that takes up local music traditions and transferes them into such solid as well as transparently arranged art songs - sometimes sung in Tirolean, sometimes in Ladin, sometimes in Serbian – without ever seeming pretentious.“

(Gerhard Stöger, Falter)

„The debut album ranges somewhere between Minimal -, Pop, World- and improvised music, whereby the artistic aspect clearly reaches far beyond all genre- limits. The name reflects the programme and it works in a fascinating way.“
Planet.tt, A, 2012
