Welcome to Medical Therapeutics. I am very excited to have you in my class this semester. I believe that students that enroll in health science related classes are among the brightest and the best and are truly at an advantage when it comes to the success of their future endeavors. My hope is to be a guide into the world of health care and I look forward to seeing you be successful! As a registered nurse of almost 17 years, I have gained valuable clinical experience that I integrate into my classroom through stories and activities. This is my third year teaching and I am pleased to be a part of the team here at CCCHS. I am looking forward to an enriching and challenging year, and I look forward to teaching you!

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Medical Therapeutics is an applied course designed to prepare students to pursue careers in therapeutic services. Upon completion of this course, a proficient student will be able to identify careers in therapeutics services; assess, monitor, evaluate, and report patient/client health status; and identify the purpose and components of treatments. The student will incorporate communication, goal setting, and information collection skills to be successful in the workplace. Standards in this course are aligned with Tennessee Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in Technical Subjects Partnership for 21st Century Skills Framework for 21st Century Learning, as well as Tennessee Anatomy and Physiology standards.*

Classroom Rules: ROAR

Be RESPECTFUL-

NO talking during lecture,
NO CELL PHONES out during class- if I see or hear them I take them!
My desk, computer, and other belongings should not be accessed by the student at any time
NO sleeping and definitely NO profanity

Be On time

You are expected to be in your seat with paper and pencil, ready to work when the bell rings

Have a positive Attitude

You will get out of the class what you put into it so if you give me 50% be prepared to earn 50%
Treat mistakes as learning opportunities

Be Responsible

You will be given 1 copy of the assignment, if you misplace it you will have to buy the next copy
You are responsible for making up missed assignments and tests in a timely manner
You are responsible for keeping your portfolio up to date
You are expected to clean up any mess and put away all supplies you utilize in class- I am not your maid

Lab Safety Procedures:

NO ONE is allowed in the lab without permission
Long hair must be tied back when working in the lab
When needed/required, proper PPE must be worn at all times
NO horseplay/improper behavior is permitted
Clean all equipment and return it to the proper location before leaving the lab area
Report any accident or injury to the instructor immediately

CONSEQUENCES / DISCIPLINE POLICY:

1st Offense – Verbal Warning

2nd Offense – Change seating assignment

3rd Offense – Written warning and small written assignment (R/T infraction)

4th Offense – Contact parent/guardian

5th Offense – Referral to Administration/ ISS/Office

PROCEDURES:

Bell work:
The bell workwill be posted on the board; begin this assignment daily when the tardy bell rings
Quizzes and Tests
Students will frequently have quizzes to test their knowledge throughout the semester.
Tests will be administered at the end of each unit of study.
Dismissal:
The teacher will dismiss the class NOT the bell.

REQUIRED SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS:

3 ring binder with page dividers, paper, and pens/pencils

HOSA:

Students are strongly encouraged to join and be active members in the Health Occupations Students of America club. HOSA is a national student organization whose mission is to promote career opportunities in health care and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. HOSA members will be involved in community events that provide them with the opportunity to develop skills and leadership roles. Each year, HOSA participates in national and local service projects to promote awareness and raise funds for organizations such as Pennies for Leukemia and the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides for Breast Cancer. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Class Participation:Classroom participation is mandatory in this class. Health care providers often work as teams to accomplish their mission. Students are therefore encouraged and required to work as teams. Teams will change frequently.

Homework: There will be little homework in this class however students are encouraged to review their notes or work daily for 10-15 minutes to be prepare for weekly vocabulary quizzes and quizzes/test over academic material. Student will be expected to read articles, journal, and respond to discussion questions at least once a week.

Absences and Make-Up Work: Missed assignments must be made up. It is your responsibility to find out what you have missed and make up the work as quickly as possible. You have seven (7) days from the date of your return to class to make up your work. Failure to do so will result in after school detention to make up the work missed.

PROJECTS SCHEDULE: Students will complete many projects and assignments throughout the semester. Project guidelines, requirements, and due dates will be discussed when the project is assigned. ** Student will have at least a 10 day notice prior to project due date. Projects turned in late will have 10 points deducted daily until project is turned in.

State Required: All students must take a safety test and pass with 100%

Students may not participate with labs until they pass with 100%

This year students in Health Science will maintain a portfolio of their work.

Class Donation: A $20.00 donation is requested to help enhance your child’s learning experience. Student Lab Materials will be purchased for labs based on the ability of funding.

All Students will be taught CPR and First Aid in the spring free of charge. If they wish to purchase a CPR/First Aid card a fee of $5.00 will be required (Please do not send CPR/First Aid card fee in until requested).

Selection Process for Advancement Opportunities:

Advancement in the Health Science Program is highly competitive. Students wishing to advance to the clinical internship program will be evaluated in this class based upon subject knowledge, quality of work, initiative, dependability, attendance, interpersonal skills, cooperation, and personal safety.Students will receive a professionalism grade each 9 weeks based on these qualities.

I often take photos of classroom lab activities and display them throughout the school and at school events. Photos also may be shared with TN Department of Education, Cheatham County Advocate newspaper and or The Ashland City Times. Please check the space below.
