a C.C. had to forfeit 20 wins in its initial season after it was learned...on February 2nd...that star player Jim Mohon had

been in high school too many semesters and was ineligible. He had scored 34 in a 68-57 win over Madisonville.

The forfeited games each gave the opposition an “official” 2-0 win.

b Daryl Owen set Maroons scoring record with 43...a mark that lasted until 1989.

c 1st year for Christian County’s new gym

d Curtis Parker, sophomore reserve, came off the bench to score 37.

e Curtis Parker scored 44 points...after fellow junior Michael Parker had 44 in a first round game.

f Seven players on this C.C. team received scholarships to play college basketball from either a 2 or 4-year school.

g Madisonville, a prohibitive favorite to repeat as region champion, fell way behind early and couldn’t catch up.

h Skylar Pharris scored 30 for Madisonville.

COACHES:

Bob Hoggard:was an assistant coach at Ft. Knox; first head coaching job at Powell Co.--3 years--74-29 record; C.C. for 5; Bowling Green for 7 (‘76-82); Oldham Co. for 6 (‘83-88); Graves Co. for 4 (‘89-92). In 1990, he told me he was planning to retire soon from KY coaching, draw his retirement, and move to TN to coach there. He won his 500th game 1-27-90 vs. Obion Co. TN. After 1991, he had won 530.

Lyle Dunbar: from Owensboro Senior and Kentucky Wesleyan, where he played basketball. (Nickname “Skillet-Hands”, according to college teammate Doug Walsh; Lyle might have the largest hands you’ll ever see.) Coached 1 year at Fordsville, 3 years at West Hopkins (was their first coach), 9 years at Scottsville, 1 year at Maysville (1975), and stayed 19 years at C.C.: 1976-94. He retired with a 628-312 record overall, 10th on Kentucky’s all-time win-list at that time. His 1976 and 1979teams were state runners-up.

Brad Fraser: graduated from Evansville North (the “Huskies”) in 1980, where they had won 3 straight sectionals. Played college ball at Mineral Area J.C. in Missouri and at the University of Southern Indiana (it was I.S.U.E. at the time.) Coached girls basketball at Providence for three years (1987-89); later was an assistant at Evansville Bosse for four years while teaching at Glenwood Middle School; and started at C.C. in 1994-95. After being regional runner-up 4 straight years, he left to take head job at Marion County...where he stayed 2 years; Burgaw (N.C.) Pender in ’02 & ’03; at Kenwood H.S. in Clarksville, TN for ’04-’06; Fleming County for ’07-’09; Crittenden County in 2011; and Seneca starting 2012.

David Joiner: as a senior led Christian County to an upset win over Madisonville in the 1983 region final and signed a basketball scholarship at Vanderbilt. Played basketball there only as an underclassman, but did play baseball for the Commodores. Was an assistant baseball and basketball coach at Madisonville before coming back to C.C. Was a very successful baseball coach at C.C. before giving that up at the end of the 1999 season.

Kerry Stovall:was a starting guard at Lyon County in 1980. Coached the Lyon County gals in 1987; assistant coach at South Hopkins in 1988; head coach at Dawson Springs from 1989-91; head coach at West Hopkins in 1992 and 1993; and head coach at Muhlenberg South from 1994 to 2001 (including coach of the KY vs. Indiana all-star team) before going to C.C. where he stayed for 10 years and won the Colonels’ first state championship in his final season. He resigned and went to Muhlenberg County High School where he taught, then was an assistant and finally became head coach of the Mustangs in 2016.
