Pictogram Teacher notes

/ Type in the title for your graph and the labels for you x and y axes.
You may wish to give each child a number from 0 to 30 so that they can input their data onto the graph, in which case the x axis will be labelled ‘pupil code’. If time is limited you may ask one person from each group to input the data and then label the x axis ‘group code’.
/ The intention of this programme is to show pupils how a vertical graph can be turned to show the data as a horizontal pictogram. For this reason if the pupils have not worked on horizontal pictograms before it is important to start this programme by clicking on the Y5 icon.
/ This graph works in exactly the same way as the Year 5 graph. Use this to remind the pupils of the work they carried out previously and to input the new data. The coins can be dragged on and deleted in the same way as the bar graph programme and the graph can be viewed as coins or as bars.
/ Now to show the pupils how the same data can be represented as a horizontal graph click on the horizontal graph icon and the whole graph will turn. It’s important at this stage to draw the pupils’ attention to the way the intervals are labelled. As a bar graph the pupils should notice that the labels are between the intervals

/ It’s important at this stage to draw the pupils’ attention to the way the intervals are labelled. As a bar graph the pupils should notice that the labels are between the intervals along the x axis and on the interval along the y axis.

/ When the graph rotates to show a horizontal pictogram the pupils attention should be drawn to the fact that the labelling of the intervals has rotated too. This time the labels along the x axis are on the interval and the labels for the y axis are between the intervals.
/ Once again this can be viewed as a pictogram or as a horizontal bar graph. By clicking on the bar graph icon.
/ If you wish to enter a second set of data then click on the Y6 icon (circled on the left) and enter you new data.
/ This second set of data could be used for comparison e.g Have we improved? Comparing Yr 5 data with Yr 6 – Comparing left/right hand, boys/girls, musical/non musical instrument etc.
To compare the two sets of data side by side click on the double graph icon (circle don the left)

/ You may let the pupils enter their data in any particular order or to generate discussion you may ask the pupils to order their data, so the person who turned the least number of coins inputs first and so on.
If pupils have already had practice with horizontal graphs then you may wish to go straight to this type of graph by clicking on the Y6 icon. The function of the programme is exactly the same as the second part of the Y5 programme.
