The ubiquitous auntie:

adocumentary shorts competition

in association with LONDON FILM ACADEMY

and win a place on an LFA Specialised Course of your choice

Tamasha is inviting independent filmmakers to submit documentary shorts that blow the lid off the ubiquitous, stereotypical Asian “auntie” character. We want you to be creative and explore diverse representations of “auntie” through short films. Our next comedy,auntie nettasees writer and actor Nimmi Harasgama, playing the part of auntie in amonologue that explores immigration and identity.

This opportunity is open to all who have an interest in filmmaking.

The brief:

Make an insightful 5 minute documentary/experimental documentary shortfilm.
Be creative and challenge the stereotypical image of the ”Asian auntie”: make it funny, intense, emotional, abstract, surreal or even music-based. Exploring strands such as migration, identity and memory may help you find the narrative thread.
The “auntie” theme must clear in your work, however you can interpret this in a broad sense:
you could interview a blood-relative or someone talking about being an auntie
someone who represent an “auntie figure” outside of the family circle
the distanced relationship of an aunt or the close bond
a conversation between two or more people

How it works and what you can win!

From the competition entries, a selection of the most promising films will be posted for viewing on the Tamasha website and advertised via our Facebook, twitter and newsletter, with biographies for each of thefilmmakers. The online gallery will allow for the public to engage with the films and feed back their responses and thoughts.
The winning film will then be screened at a central London Tamasha Scratch Night in the autumn to a mixture of invited industry guests and public audience.
The winner will then be offered a place on one of the London Film Academy Specialised Courses of their choice from this selection: Documentary: A filmmaker’s toolkit, Directing: A Filmmaker’s toolkit, Composing: Music in Film, Producing: The Business of Film and Writing: Screenplay in a Day (places subject to availability, see website for upcoming dates).

You will also get free membership to the network ClubPanico@LFA, which helps its members find work, expand their industry contacts and supports their independent productions.

The runner up will receive a copy of Shooting People’s bookMichael Winterbottom:Interviews(Conversations with Filmmakers) edited by Damon Smith (2011).

foreign language work must be subtitled in English.
applicants may enter more than one film but must complete a separate application for each film.
you must hold all copyright for the film before submitting.

all submissions must include the completed Application Pack.
