Special warning
Please note: The following is general guidance for using compact fluorescent lamps (bulbs).
As a precautionary measure, and in line with best practice, we recommend that customers should not use a light at a distance closer than 30cm (1 foot) for an extended period of time. If you need to use the light for more than an hour, simply position it further than 30cm (1 foot) away from you, to continue your task.
This applies particularly to people with sensitive skin or skin conditions. This recommendation refers to task lighting (desk or floor lights) which can be positioned close to exposed skin.
Please note: When using this light the best position is to have it positioned below eye level between you and what you are doing. It is important to have the light shade below eye level to prevent glare.
Also the amount of illumination on an object increases fourfold if the distance between the lamp and the object is halved. Remember to keep some background lighting on as well as it will help prevent eye strain.
Using lighting correctly, wherever you need it, can make a big difference to the amount you can see. For more advice and general tips on lighting you can visit RNIB’s website or order our booklet on "Improving lighting in your home" (code IP412).
General description
These multi-angle desk/table lights are ideal for use at home or work, and are perfect to use while writing or reading.
Orientation
This adjustable lightcomes in three parts: the light with adjustable arm, the base and the clamp.
The light shade is connected to two long metallic arms, both of which are constructed of two metallic bars which are spring loaded to assist with the adjustable element. At the end of each arm is a hinge with a wing nut, which when loosened, allows you to move the arm to suit your position. Simply then re-tighten the wing nut.
Please take extra care when moving the arm not to trap your fingers between the two metallic bars of the arm, as the spring forces the bars to close.
At the bottom of the arm is a stem, which is to be inserted into the base or clamp.
The light shade rotates and, again, can be tightened and loosened using the wing nut at the top end of the arm. The bulb is fitted into the underside of the shade and the On/Off switch is located on top of the shade, at the end nearest to the arm.
Using the product
Using the table base
Please ensure the base is placed on a firm level surface. The surface should be adequate enough to support the weight and care should be taken when lifting the base. Insert the stem of the light into the hole in the top of the base and then tighten the screw on the stem part of the base to keep the light’s arm secure.
If you wish to pick up and move the light it is advisable to remove it from the base first.
Using the table clamp
The clamp will fit most tables. First unscrew the bolt so there is enough room between the jaws of the clamp to fit around the table edge. The flat square surface of the clamp needs to be placed on top the table and the jaws of the clamp underneath. Ensure the bolt is tightened firmly. Once clamp is secured, insert the stem of the light’s arm into the hole at the top of the clamp.
Bulbs for your new RNIB light
The RNIB light comes supplied with a fluorescent light bulb, technically called a PL fluorescent lamp. This bulb has the following advantages compared to standard tungsten bulbs:-
- It does not get hot when being used.
- It last up to eight times longer than a tungsten bulb of a similar wattage.
- It gives off five times more light compared to a tungsten bulb of similar wattage.
The bulb fitted into the light is a daylight bulb, manufactured by the company that has produced the light with RNIB, The Daylight Company. This type of bulb produces a light that is very similar to daylight and some people find reading with this type of light much easier. Because of the daylight effect colours under the light appear very much as they would do in natural daylight.
Only change the bulb if you feel confident, otherwise ask someone to help you.
Fitting a replacement tube
Please note:RNIB does not guarantee the bulb.
This light is supplied with an 11watt Daylight PL tube with a G23 lamp cap which is already fitted. The colour temperature of this tube is 6500K (Kelvin). A replacement bulb is available from RNIB (product code DH174).
Also available from RNIB are 11watt tubes for this light with different colour temperatures (Kelvin), under product codes DH349 for 2700K and DH352 for 4000K.
Candlelight is classed as 1,000K as it gives out a warm, orange/red colour whereas a daylight simulation bright white light would be 6,500K.
Do not use a higher wattage tube as this will damage your light and invalidate the guarantee.
Before replacing the tube, switch off the light and unplug it from the mains supply. Gently ease the old tube out of its support clip and then pull it out of the tube holder. Please discard safely. Push the replacement tube into the tube holder and gently ease it into the support clip. Your light is now ready for use.
Hints and Tips
General maintenance
During cleaning operations make sure the light is disconnected from the mains supply. The light requires no special maintenance. If the light is heavily soiled it can be wiped with a damp cloth with a mild soap solution. Do not use liquid or spray cleaners as they may enter the shade housing, affecting electrical safety. As with all electrical appliances, care must be taken with trailing wires.
Plug-in Ballast
The unit contains no user serviceable parts - Do not attempt to dismantle. (In case of doubt consult a qualified electrician).
