Background

AKWOS (Association of Kigali Women in Sports) is a non governmental organization incorporated in Kigali, Rwanda. In May 2007, AKWOS received a grant from NIKE. The major aim of the grant was to support the goal of AKWOS which is to empower women and girls of Rwanda and the region through sports to better handle their social-economic, cultural and educational and health challenges. This is a programmatic and financial report for the first two months of the project.

Project outputs/achievements

1.  Two meetings were held with 35 sector leaders in charge of sports. In sector, a girls’ team, boys’ team and a tem for the disabled were formed.

2.  120 sports teams are being trained to participate in the celebrations to mark the Centenary of Kigali city.

3.  In addition to foot ball, each district of Kigali will also get a team for basket ball, Volley ball and athletics.

4.  The official launch of sports event was held in Kigali on the 20th of June 2007. All teams participated in this event including a women team from Holland. The AKWOS women team emerged the winner

5.  A calendar (fixtures) of the tournament games has been released. The competitions ran from June and will culminate into the grand final in October.

6.  Registration of all players to participate in the competitions has been finalised

7.  A cooperation has been established with the Rwandan Ministry of Gender to put out messages to sensitize the public on sports for women

8.  On all sports events, the following activities have been held:

a)  Sensitization on the awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS

b)  Free testing and counselling

c)  Life skills training for the youth

d)  Promotion of reconciliation

e)  Promotion of women rights

Financial report

Accountability of the funds for the first 2 months has been completed. An accountability statement is attached. All invoices and backup documentation are available at the AKWOS secretariat for future inspection or audit.
