Trade Map and Brochure Project 30 Points
Overview
During the period of 600 C.E. to 1450 C.E. the expansion of trade is one of the main developments in this era. As such students will create a map that illustrates this expansion of trade and create a brochure of a main trading city.
Trade Map 15 Points
Using a blank map of the Eastern Hemisphere, locate and label (in INK) the following:
1. Topographical barriers (physical features)
2. Major Trade Cities
3. Trade Routes (overland AND sea routes)
4. Methods of transportation- draw ON appropriate routes
5. Goods traded on specific routes- use symbols
6. Outline political units / empires in the Eastern Hemisphere about 1000 CE and identify
7. Make a key for any symbols you use.
8. On the back of the map write a comparison thesis statement about trade in two
selected regions. Also write your name on the back of the map – not on front.
The map will be evaluated on its accuracy, detail, and clarity.
Brochure 15 Points
Choose two of the following trade cities and compare their similarities and differences in a bi or tri-fold brochure on A4 paper that includes sections on:
1. 1-2 pictures of that city about 1000 C.E.
2. Form(s) of government – 2 sims and 2 differences
3. major trade items – 2 sims and 2 differences
4. dominate religions – 2 sims and 2 differences
5. labor systems used in the cities – 2 sims and 2 differences
Selected Trade Cities: Canton, Samarkand, Cairo, Timbuktu, Venice, Malacca
The brochure will be evaluated on its accuracy, organization, and presentation. Include a separate sheet with full MLA citations for sources used in the completion of the map and brochure.
*Geographical location cannot be used as a Difference or Similarity! The kinds of environmental mosaics can be used.
Due Date
Both parts of the project are due on Monday, 15 November 2010 by 3pm.
10% deduction for 1 calendar day late.
30% deduction for 2 calendar days late.
3 calendar days late – no credit earned.
100% deduction for no bibliography for the project.
