Robert Hartmann McNamara is currently an Assistant Professor of Political Science and Criminal Justice at the Citadel. He is a former Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center for Social Research at Furman University. He is the author of thirteen books: Boundary Dwellers: Homeless Women in Transitional Housing with Amy Hauser and Carrie Flagler; A New Look at Social Problems in America; Street Deviance: The Social Ecology of Atlanta’s Little Five Points, with Elizabeth Hammond and Carrie Flagler; Perspectives on Social Problems; Understanding Contemporary Social Problems, with Sarah Vatland; Crossing the Line: Interracial Couples in the South; with Maria Tempenis and Beth Walton; Crime Displacement: The Other Side of Prevention; The Times Square Hustler: Male Prostitution in New York City; Sex, Scams and Street Life: The Sociology of New York City’s Times Square; Beating the Odds: Crime, Poverty, and Life in the Inner City; Police and Policing with Dr. Dennis Kenney; The Urban Landscape: Selected Readings with Dr. Kristy McNamara; Social Gerontology with Dr. David Redburn;, and Managing a Deviant Status: Field Research and the Labeling Perspective with Deanna Ramey and Linda Henry. Dr. McNamara has also served as a Senior Research Fellow for the National Strategy Information Center, the Policy Lab, the Police Executive Research Forum, in Washington, D.C. and the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, in Baltimore, MD.

Dr. McNamara has also published numerous articles on a variety of topics and has been a consultant for state, federal and private agencies on topics such as AIDS, drug abuse, urban redevelopment, homelessness, policing, and gangs, and health care. He recently worked with the Regional Community Policing Institute at Eastern Kentucky University to study school safety in eight high schools across the state. He also worked with the Mexican government and the National Strategy Information Center to develop an anti-corruption curriculum in their public schools. Dr. McNamara holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Yale University.
