2013

LEVEL 1 COURSE STRUCTURE

When in Year 11 a student will be entering Level 1 of NCEA, (National Certificate of Educational Achievement). To gain an NCEA certificate a student must pass in their chosen subjects. These standards generate a certain number of credits.

Achievement Standards are assessed internally by the school during the year, or externally. External assessments will be by examinations prepared by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. These are sat at the end of the year with the exception of Common Assessment Tasks such as in Mathematics. Some subjects will submit a portfolio or have a visiting assessor.

To gain a Level 1 National Certificate of Education a student must gain 80 credits. Ten of these credits must show numeracy skills and ten other credits show literacy skills. There are three pathways to gain numeracy and literacy. The majority of students will gain it through taking Mathematics or English courses. Some may gain it through other subjects that have specified numeracy or literacy elements in it.

NZQA will send you a Record of Learning which is a record of all standards you have received. The standards you achieve each year from then on will be added to it.

It must be noted that an English course, a Mathematics course and a Science course is compulsory at Level 1.

LEVEL 2 COURSE STRUCTURE

Year 12 courses will be based around Level 2 of the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA). The course will be made up of Achievement Standards and/or Unit Standards. Throughout a full year’s course most subjects will offer an opportunity to gain 18 to 24 credits. To best meet the learning needs of students, some may choose at Year 12 to take some Level 1 or Level 3 subjects.

In order for a student to gain a Level 2 National Certificate of Education they must gain a minimum of 60 credits at Level 2 and a further 20 credits from any other level. This means that those students who gained over 80 credits at Level 1 can credit 20 towards their Level 2 Certificate.

LEVEL 3 COURSE STRUCTURE

At Year 13 students will generally take courses based on Level 3 NCEA, but to best meet the learning needs of students, some may choose at Year 13 to take some Level 1 and/or Level 2 subjects.

In order for a student to gain a Level 3 National Certificate of Education they must gain a minimum of 60 credits at Level 3 and a further 20 credits from any other level. This means that those students who gained over 80 credits at Level 1 or 2 can credit these towards their Level 3 Certificate.

2012 is a transition year for the realigned standards at Level 3.

UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE

A person shall be qualified for entrance to a university in New Zealand if he/she has obtained:

  • a minimum of 42 credits at Level 3 or higher on the National Qualifications Framework, including a minimum of 14 credits at Level 3 or higher in each of two subjects from an approved subject list, with a further 14 credits at Level 3 or higher taken from no more than two additional domains on the National Qualifications Framework or approved subjects
  • a minimum of 14 credits at Level 1 or higher in Mathematics or Pangarau on the National Qualifications Framework
  • a minimum of 10 credits at Level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Maori; 5 credits must be in Reading and 5 credits must be in Writing. The literacy credits will be selected from a schedule of approved Achievement Standards.
  • 14 credits in Mathematics at Level One or higher
  • 5 credits at Level Two or above in Reading
  • 5 credits at Level Two or above in Writing

UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE FROM 2014

From 2014 there will be a new university entrance (UE) requirement. Students will use this new UE to enter degree-level programmes from 2015. The new UE requirement will continue to be the minimum requirement for entry to university.

From 2014, students will need all of the following to be awarded UE:

  • attain NCEA Level 3
  • achieve 14 credits at level three in each of three subjects from the list of approved subjects. The list of approved subjects will consist of subjects derived from the New Zealand Curriculum with achievement standards at Level 3.
  • achieve UE numeracy – 10 credits at Level 1 and above from specific achievement standards, or three specific numeracy unit standards.
  • achieve UE literacy – 10 credits (five in reading and five in writing) at Level 2 and above from specific standards.

New UE requirements from 2014 / Current UE requirements
Achievement of NCEA Level 3 / 42 credits at Level 3 or above
14 credits in each of three subjects from the list of approved subjects / 14 credits in each of two subjects from the list of approved subjects
14 credits from not more than two additional domains or approved subjects

UE literacy – 10 credits (five in reading and five in writing) from
  • specific level 2 and above achievement standards, or specific Te Reo Maori and Te Reo Rangatira level 2 and above standards, or
  • two specific level 4 English for academic purposes unit standards, or
  • an academic literacy common assessment tool (CAT) at level 3 (no credit value, run by NZQA).
/ UE literacy – 8 credits (four reading and four writing from specific list of standards) at level 2 or above from English or Te Reo Maori

SCHOLARSHIP

New Zealand Scholarship is registered at level 4 on the New Zealand Register of Quality Assured Qualifications. It is a stand-alone qualification designed to extend very high-achieving level 3 students. It will also identify top scholars.

If you have achieved a lot of standards with excellence throughout your school studies and are doing level 3 standards, you might want to think about trying for the New Zealand Scholarship.

Scholarship assessments cover the same content as level 3 achievement standards so a separate course is not needed. They just assess you at a higher level.

There is a monetary award if students are successful in achieving a scholarship.

Any student wishing to consider Scholarship should talk directly to their subject teacher.

ARTS

MUSIC

AIMS:

  • To enable students to develop skills and literacies and assist students to participate in and develop a lifelong interest in music. Students will develop practical knowledge in music, exploring and using the elements, conventions, techniques and technologies of music.

Level One NCEA

Music is an option at Level One for 2013.

  • Students will be assessed internally performing as a soloist or as a member of a group.
  • Undertake composition tasks
  • Complete a research assignment
  • 10 credits are offered for performance

  • For performance standards a student has to have learnt an instrument for a minimum of 3 years from an itinerant or registered teacher.

Additional Information /
  • The two performance achievement standards in Music can be taken without taking Music as a full course as long as the prerequisite is met.

Level Two NCEA

Music is an option at Level Two for 2013

VISUAL ARTS

AIMS:

  • To generate and develop ideas through, drawing, painting or photography, by researching and producing artworks using different media.

Level One NCEA

Throughout this course students will research different artist models. They create work through visual media and produce a final portfolio for external examination.

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

ADVENTURE LEADERSHIP

AIMS:

  • Adventure Leadership provides a programme with an emphasis on developing self awareness and healthy relationships through personal challenge, self reflection, debriefs and peer feedback.
  • Level 2 Adventure Experience focuses on participation and beginning to develop leadership skills.
  • Level 3 Adventure Leadership provides opportunities to use and develop these skills in various settings.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

AIMS:

The study of Physical Education requires an understanding of many different aspects of knowledge and overlaps into many other curriculum areas. The general aims of the subject are to

  • Provide opportunities to study in-depth aspects of physical education
  • Provide opportunities for personal and social development by including students in activities which require individual endeavour and interaction with others

Level One NCEA

Physical Education is optional for Level One NCEA students.

In 2012 Year 10 students will be advised at interviews as to whether they are suitable for the subject in 2013. This will be based on staff recommendations and discussions with parents/caregivers. Please note that this subject is approximately half practical and half theory based entirely on achievement standards.

Level 1 /
  • A minimum of 14 internal credits on offer
  • Level One NCEA Physical Education will study areas relating to knowledge of the human body and how it moves, How a person acquires skill, How a person manages themselves in a physical setting, How peoples’ interpersonal skill impact upon a group or team and what behaviours do we need to show to be responsible in physical activities.

  • Participation at practical sessions is compulsory, a medical certificate is required if you will be missing practical’s for a length of time.
  • appropriate clothing must be brought for practical classes

Level Two NCEA

Physical Education is optional for Level Two NCEA students.

In 2011 Year 11 students will be advised at interviews as to whether they are suitable for the subject in 2012. This will be based on staff recommendations and discussions with parents/caregivers and achievement patterns in internal and external assessments.

Level Two NCEA Physical Education is predominately a theory based course with practical sessions associated with certain internal standards. The entire course is internally assessed so therefore requires students to work well throughout the year.

Course / Structure / Requirements
Level 2 /
  • A minimum of 14 internal credits on offer
  • Level Two NCEA Physical Education can study areas relating to Functional Anatomy, Exercise Physiology, Motor Skill Learning, Principles/Methods of Training, Biomechanics, Leadership in Physical Education, Risk and Injury Management, and performing a physical skill to a national standard.

  • Participation at practical sessions is compulsory, a medical certificate is required if you will be missing practical’s for a length of time.
  • appropriate clothing must be brought for practical classes
  • Students must have completed either Level One NCEA Physical Education or have passed Literacy requirements at Level 1 NCEA

Level Three NCEA

Physical Education is optional for Level Three NCEA students.

In 2012 Year 12 students will be advised at interviews as to whether they are suitable for the subject in 2013. This will be based on staff recommendations and discussions with parents/caregivers and achievement patterns in internal assessments.

Level Three NCEA Physical Education is predominately a course where the students will apply the knowledge learnt at Level Two. It is highly recommended that a student taking Level 3 NCEA Physical Education has had at least one year experience at either Level One or Two NCEA Physical Education. Because of the high literacy standard required at Level 3 NCEA Physical Education it is also highly recommended that students have completed at least one appropriate Level Two NCEA Writing (English) standard. The course will be taught entirely with Achievement Standards. The entire course is internally assessed so therefore requires students to work well throughout the year.

  • A minimum of 14 internal credits on offer
  • Level Three NCEA Physical Education studies areas relating to planning participation in a physical activity, Appraising and analysing a physical activity, In depth study of a physical activity issue affecting New Zealand, Performing a physical skill to a national standard, and implement and reviewing a skill improvement program.

  • Students must have completed either Level One or Two NCEA Physical Education courses and also have completed at least one Level 2 NCEA Writing (English) standard.

FOOD TECHNOLOGY AND NUTRITION

AIMS:

  • To provide students with practical skills to prepare, cook and present a range of food. To understand the nutritional value of food types and the importance food has to our bodies, daily life, our local community and the global society.

Level One NCEA

Food Technology and Nutrition is an option for Level One NCEA students.

Level 1 /
  • 20 credits (maximum) are offered
  • 1 standard assessed externally
  • 4 Literacy credits
  • Some hospitality unit standards may be offered

  • Perishable food items for practical cooking sessions. This is part of the class work and internal assessments.
  • It is preferred that students have completed Food Technology in Year 10.

Level Two NCEA
