Thursday, 03/23: Read aloud in character. Recognize conflict, motivation, reversal, dramatic irony (1.3.8 J, C, B).

Materials: Lit book, drama terms list

  1. Check and discuss homework.
  2. Volunteers read Act 2:3. Discuss.
  1. Assignment:

a.Completenotes and questions. Keep all of these materials in preparation for a class discussion.

b.Take note of Mrs. Frank’s character and the changes you’re witnessing.

  1. Why are these changes happening now?
  2. Why didn’t she ever stand up for herself before (when Mrs. Van Daan speaks poorly about Anne)?

c.Take note of Mr. Van Daan’s behavior.

  1. Where have we seen these actions before?
  2. What does this say about the “rats?”

d.Where does Peter show loyalty to his father?

  1. Why would Peter respect him after he has disgraced the family?

e.Complete the following in paragraph form:

  1. Analyze Mr. Frank’s quote: “We don’t need the Nazi’s to destroy us. We’re destroying ourselves” (426 col. A).

f.Reversal: The point at which the action of the plot turns in an unexpected direction for the protagonist. Where is there an example of reversal in this scene?

Friday, 03/24: Read aloud in character. Recognize conflict, motivation, exposition, suspense, climax, resolution, flashback, dramatic license (1.3.8 A, B, C, D, F, J).

  1. Check and discuss homework.
  2. If there is time, read Act II scenes 4 and 5. Discuss the end of the play.
  3. Assignment:
  4. Complete reading, notes, and questions. Be prepared for a large group discussion on Monday.

Scene IV

  1. What information (exposition) does Mr. Van Daan reveal about why they remained in Amsterdam instead of going to Switzerland or America?
  2. Now that you look back on the play, how does this information add to your understanding of some of the characters?
  3. The climax of the story occurs in this scene. Where is it?
  4. Complete the following in paragraph form:
  5. Analyze Mr. Frank’s quote: “For the past two years we have lived in fear. Now we can live in hope” (433 col. A).
  6. Describe how each character reacts when the police arrive.
  7. Is this how you would expect them to behave? Why or why not? (If you need to look at the growing tension leading up to the capture to answer this, go ahead and do so.)

  3. Each scene provides us with a reminder that this play is told as a flashback. What was that reminder?
