WATER TABLE TRAINING - 2014

Open to VDH Staff, Private Consultants, Installers and O + M Providers

Training on relating soil morphology to the seasonal water table is being offered in central Virginia. The exact same training has been offered each Spring for several years. The selected sites have had 2 years of continuous water table monitoring. Several sites have operating septic systems present. Discussions will relate precipitation, landscape position, soil morphology and parent materials to measured water table readings. One of the soils studied is an upper Coastal Plain soil (or, it is commonly seen in cappings of the Piedmont) and is typically used for conventional septic systems. Soil texture lab data and extensive Ksat (Amoozemeter) permeability data from the sites will be reviewed. Some surprising results on where to call the seasonal water table will be reviewed.

The sessions will be in the Second Floor Large Meeting Room in the Environmental Section of the Henrico County Health Dept. (located at 8600 Dixon Powers Drive, near the intersection of Parham & Staples Mill Roads). BRING ALONG A LUNCH & DRINK- we will not be stopping for lunch. The session will proceed rain or shine, so dress accordingly.

The session will start with a short introduction to how the research was conducted, Ksat vs permeability, soil wetness terms, Q & A, and directions to the first field site. The training session will then involve visits to three field sites where the soil profile will be observed, research results discussed, and the implications for land use debated. NOTE- FIELD VISITS WILL INVOLVE SOME WALKING OVER ROUGH GROUND OR IN THE WOODS.

The training dates: April 22 starting at 11:30 AM; or April 23 starting at 9:30 AM. The same material will be covered both days, so choose only one session.Classes are limited to 20 per session.

Paperwork for CPE’s (Continuing Professional Education) will be available for anyone needing them to meet DPOR requirements. There is no cost for this training or for CPE paperwork. 4.5 CPE hours will be awarded.

For VDH Offices: Environmental Managers/Supervisors are asked to relay this information to their VDH field staff (especially newer employees, who may not have had a chance to attend earlier sessions of this training).

ALL Participants (VDH and Private Consultants) MUST register for this training in advance of the class at TRAIN under Course ID#1021649 (VDH: Water Table Study and Geomorphic Relationships).

ALL Participants (VDH and Private Consultants) MUST CONTACT Jay Conta at (804) 501-4530 or and leave your name, the session you’d like to attend, and an emergency number where you can be contacted (in case we suddenly need to cancel due to weather- tornado) and Email address (please spell it out).
